Okay, I may have asked too broad of a question last time around and think I can narrow it down a bit now. Sorry if I’m being redundant, just looking for some info.
Strength aside (only running 31’s), purely from a drivability standpoint, all things being equal, does a 4x4x2 box handle any better (track straighter, turn smoother, return to center better, feel nicer) than a stock 77 Saginaw box?
Has anyone made that change? Thanks

I've never changed one for the other but our '76 has the stock box but with a Delphi pump and the '68 has a 4x4x2 box with a delphi pump and - no the 4x4x2 doesn't do any of those better. In fact i think the stock box is easier to turn and returns to center better but those could be a result of the pulleys or a number of steering geometey differences.

I had a bigger difference in driver feel or comfort when I went from stock tie-rod set up to the f-150 tro. I figure the reduced angle on the drag link and less flex on the parts make the difference.

I’ll look into that. I just got a new one to replace my other new one so I’m hoping to stop buying new one soon but whatever it takes. I’m 90% happy with it, I’m just looking for that final 10%. My column is half 69 half 77 (new bearings though) so that may be suspect.

I've got to say, my factory '77 steering is great with 33's and aftermarket tie-rod/drag link setup, even with a sloppy column. I can only hope it drives as nice with the 4x4x2 box I'm building, ram-assist and 37's...but then reality sinks in and I temper my expectations accordingly.

I've owned stock set ups in my '68, '73, and '77. The '77 inverted Y tie rod and faster ratio of the Saginaw box make the best handling combo of any I've driven. The after market tie rod is no improvement and tends to bump steer.

Hmm, I have both, maybe I’ll switch back a forth and see what it does for me. Our roads are so ate up, I can’t tell if I’m wondering or bump steering!
