The alternator is Explorer specific.
The power steering pump is not, but might as well get it as they are not that common.
A/C compressor I have heard of others that fit, but my collection of late model A/C compressors are all a no go except for the Explorer pump.
The fan and clutch are unique to the Explorer, but an easy find it to get a fan and clutch assambly from a 4.0 pushrod V6 Explorer. The combined fan/clutch are a replacment, but not seperate pieces.

Are you certain the 4.0 Explorer fan and clutch are interchangeable? Reason I ask is the clutch fan I pulled a few weeks back has started oozing crap from it. The 4.0 Explorers are a dime a dozen in local yards, and Im thinking about excercising that 30 day warranty. I doubt I'll find another 5.0 Explorer, but if the 4.0 has the same fan and clutch, I should be good. I've looked in the hood of a few 4.0 Explorers and it seems like I remember seeing a white plastic fan that is somewhat shaped differently. Is it only particular year 4.0's that share the same clutch and fan?

On a side note......how does the fan/clutch come off the water pump? I see a large hex on the shaft where the two come together....is that fan/clutch threaded on? If so....Great! :(....how friggin tight is that going to be? Any tricks on separating the two?

The easiest way that I've found is to have the correct wrench for that big hex and a special tool that grabs two of the bolt heads on the pulley assembly and then force them apart. I found the wrench at Pep Boys for $20 (don't spend $50 for the Lisle one) and the tool that holds the bolt heads is available at Napa. I can't remember the price on it.

I have also seen people use a chisel and a big hammer to break the big hex loose. And check with 1sicbronconut (Steve George) on this forum. He's a very sharp Ford tech and told me about a tool recently (can't remember the details) that he has to separate them.

That's what I did, but don't recommend it. I had a few bruised fingers by the day's end.

Repeat....Bowsher, are you certain on the interchangability of the 4.0 & 5.0 Explorer fan and clutch?

Yes. I have both of them off and sitting next to each other right now. They are at home, I am at work so no pictures. If I can remember I will take a few pix this evening and point them out. I used the 4.0 fan as a mock up so I didn't bugger up the 5.0 fan when doing my V8 Ranger. finally assambly used the 5.0 and it fit just like the 4.0.

I happened to be down at a shop and the guy broke the clutch free and hand tightened for me to take off easier at home, no charge. It is on of those situations where having the correct tool makes all the difference.

I did a some part # research, and according to part #'s the clutch is different between 4.0 & 5.0. That is unless I looked at incorrect years. Do you happen to remember if it was 96 & newer 4.0 with the same fan & clutch as 96+ 5.0?

Correct, the clutch is not interchangable. The fan is not interchangable. But as a whole assambly it is interchangable.

5.0 fan with 4.0 clutch = no
4.0 fan with 5.0 clutch = no
5.0 fan with 5.0 clutch = yes
4.0 fan with 4.0 clutch = yes

Outside diameter is the same
Mounting depth is the same
mounting threads are the same
Rotation is the same

Fan to clutch mounting pattern is different.

Thanks a million Bowsher for clearing that up. I went looking this morning at 4.0 Exploders, they all had plastic multi blade fans. I almost grabbed a 4.0 clutch to use with the 5.0 fan blade I have, thankfully I didn't have the puller. The 4.0 fan appears to have the same blade count as the steel 5.0 Exploder fans, but I didn't count to be sure.

Is there any advantage, plastic vs. steel fan blade?

Interesting.....there must be differences between the years of Explorers. Here is a pic of the fan, clutch, & water pump from the 96 Explorer I pillaged. Steel fan blade, no plastic here......

Looks exactly like mine. Steel, not plastic.

I know when I had my plastic one on, it kicked out loads of air, much much more than the steel 6 blade I had before.

I think the volume of air is a function of blade count and pitch?

Any opinions out there.....plastic blade or steel blade? Why?

I called damperdudes today, they charge $60 to rebalance 'your' harmonic balancer, if they need to re-vulcanize (I think thats 'rebuild') then it's $120. There turn around is 1 day, and I was quoted $12 for shipping. Not too bad.
A new balancer at Napa is $78 bucks. Item#: BK 6005318

I took my 28 balancer and the 50 Explorer baancer to a machine shop.
Handed them the Explorer balancer and told them I wanted it balanced just like this one and handed them the 28.

They put the 28 in the balancer, got a reading. Then put the 50 in and drilled holes until it was the same as the 28 was\

Nice and smooth all the way to 6600
