Hello

I have a 1968 ford Bronco with a 3 speed manual behind stock inline 6 . I have a NP435 4 speed I would like to install in the truck and keep the Inline 6
anyone done this ?

Here is what I have figured out so far

-connection to motor/ bell housing appears to be the same
-adaptors and Main shafts that are available to dana 20 are all design for V8 application
-installing a 3" body lift to make room for the transmission as it will sit back more on the tunnel then in a V8
- will have to move transfer case back from stock location shorten rear DS lengthen front drive shaft

is there anything I'm missing that could be a problem

thanks

Brad

I have a friend that put a NP435 in his '66 with the I6. It's been a while (a long while). I don't recall there being any bellhousing problems at all. I think you are correct that the drivelines needed adjusted. I remember that we needed to fabricate a new transmission support after the Advance Adapter kit was installed but I don't remember any details. The body lift was already on that Bronco.

I think we did the whole swap in one weekend, so it wasn't full of odd problems. I think you are on the right track.

Question on this swap.. I see "adaptor plate" mentioned, I'm at a loss as to this part, I see that the i6 intermediate housing will still be used for a 6cyl swap, from what I can tell. Is there a small plate that goes between np435 and i6 intermediate housing? I'm wanting to attempt this swap soon.

It has been a long time since the NP435 was the go to swap. So I may be a little rusty on this...

The normal conversion involves a new aftermarket transmission to transfer case adaptor. This is the one you can still get today.

There was a "new" economy conversion that existed for a little while that was an adaptor plate and I6 intermediate housing. It was intended for V8 applications and served to make the shorter I6 adaptor the same length as the V8 adaptor, while making the adaption as well. I don't remember seeing any mention of this adaptor plate in the past decade. No idea if you can get one these days. It still spaced the transfer case and transmission just like the normal adaptor.

As Bowsher points out, the plate you mention was a cheaper way of putting an NP435 behind a V8 if you had a stock six cylinder adapter. The one piece adapter that all the vendors sell is around $400. If you had an inexpensive six cylinder stock EB adapter, there once was an adapter plate available for around $150 that you used in conjuction with the six cylinder adapter. Not terribly common, but known of. With the advent of modern five speed manuals and overdrive automatics, the NP435 isn't a widely used swap anymore and no one as far as I know still offers the adapter plate.

To the OP, you're going to have to relocate the transmission cross member. The stock holes in the frame will be too far forward with the six cylinder engine since there's no NP435 adapter for the inline six.

Before you start, take the output yoke off the NP435 and verify it is 28 spline. They also had 31 spline, which won't work with the 28 spline that is part of the transfer case.

We (my company) used to sell those Np-435 to 6-banger intermediate housing adapters. I might have one or two still on the shelf and I know the CNC programs are still on t he Bridgeport. I think it was Bax of all people that bought the last one I sold. That was probably 75 years ago..
