'66 170 running really rich

So I've just finished installing a new accelerator diaphragm in my carburetor oh, and now the engine is running extremely rich. I've tuned to my carburetors air/fuel next to about as leanas I can and there's still smoke pouring out of the exhaust and a very rough idle.

Just replaced the diaphragm or did you rebuild the carb as well? Color of smoke?

Two things come to mind. Choke stuck closed. Needle and seat have junk holding them open, typically you can see fuel dripping off the venture booster when that happens.

Just replaced the diaphragm, but it did clean out the carb with a lint free towel while I had it apart. The smoke was a slightly blueish color, probably because of the ethonal free gas

Agree with Broncobowsher. If you've never rebuilt the carb, I would pull it off, tear it down, give it a solvent bath and rebuild it. Kit's are cheap, easy and available at any of the parts stores. Just pay attention to where the small ball bearings are located as you take it apart. I have run across a couple that were just completely worn out, and the rebuild did nothing.

And before you do anything else with the carb I would make sure that your ignition system is up to the task of burning all the fuel. Lots of carburetor problems have turned out to be a weak, or ill timed spark.

If it hasn't had a full tune-up on a long time, then it's time for it all most likely. But if it's still running points, or has old components and tired wiring, I'd look there at least at the same time, if not before messing more with the carburetor.

well my guess now is it something with the timing, but I have absolutely no idea how to tune it. There's no shortage of tutorials on a 302 but none for a 170.

There are tech articles on fordsix.com and also a forum. If you have to replace the carb a larger one barrel can help but you should upgrade to a DSII igntion system to go with it. You most likely have the scv dist / carb combo which is not really that good.

And once you find the small detail differences on the 170, the tuning basics area mostly the same.
Just a matter of which way to turn the distributor to advance, which firing order, what spark plugs to get, whether the plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser (if equipped) and basic vehicle wiring are good, etc.

But a sure-fire way to play around is simply to loosen the distributor hold-down thingy and spin the distributor slightly while the engine is running.
If you turn it 1/4" (not a 1/4 turn!) one way and the engine idle speed slows down, you are retarding the timing. If you turn it and the idle speeds up, you're advancing it.

You can tweak it this way slightly by ear, then drive it to see if it "pings" under heavy acceleration.
You can also do some basic cleanup and testing by removing the distributor cap and manipulating the mechanisms to see if they're clunky or smooth, or loose or tight, or just don't work like they should.

I bet FordSix forum does have all the details. A lot of Broncos have the 170, but you're right that it doesn't seem to come up here very often.

And I know from my Mustang days those 170's can be kind of tricky. But I'd bet that web site mentioned can help you sort it out, good luck!
