so i was originally thinking of hooking up the vacuum wipers to one of the vac ports on my explorer upper intake. got thinking that i probably wont have much vacuum under acceleration to operate the wipers? if so what other options do i have to make them work?

thanks

I have the same question. I've got a 68 with vacuum wipers, which I want to keep because they're quirky. I'm considering putting the explorer front dress on my 289, which is not compatible with my vacuum fuel pump.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with an electric vacuum pump, like this version for Ford Super duty diesels? It's described as generating 17 hg of vacuum, but won't pull enough volume to power a brake booster. Maybe it can pull enough for the wipers?

I hope this question isn't hijacking the thread!

Not running vacuum wipers, but with my other vacuum accessories I used a small vacuum canister to make up for loss of vacuum during acceleration. Dunno how much wipers draw, so it may not be a feasible option for that.

Could also just not floor it in the rain, you'll spin out anyway :)

Same recommendations. A vacuum pump (whether electric or engine driven) AND the reservoir. And preferably, I believe, one of the larger sizes.

so in my case i should not use the upper plenum as a vacuum source and go with a electric+canister? or i can use the upper plenum+canister?

You can certainly still use the plenum, and the reservoir is added to help make up for at least some of the shortcoming of using engine vacuum. In fact, since you're likely going to want the reservoir either way, I would just add it to engine vacuum and see how it works.
You can always add the external vacuum pump later, if engine vacuum turns out to be insufficient.

I could see that happening if for example you spend a lot of time driving up hill or accelerating quickly. Or have a big lumpy cam with low engine vacuum even at idle.
I imagine there are circumstances when even the addition of a reservoir to engine vacuum would not be sufficient, but I think it would be seldom for most of us.

Then again, maybe the vacuum wipers need more than even a reservoir could cure. Those with lots of experience using them would have to answer that. I've spent only a minimal amount of time using them, and that was a very long time ago.
