Is it possible to remove the manual steering shaft through the engine compartment, or is it best to remove the column and everything through the cab (is that possible with the top on)?

If you loosen the column both under the dash and at the firewall, you can angle everything to slip the long shaft past the frame rail.

If you have stock seats, you can remove the column and shaft by pulling it into the cab. with high back seats, it will hit the headrest before it clears the dash. If you have highback seats and they recline, that will solve that interference issue.
