That is a nice looking 77, but it has to be smogged. Any of you Cali guys have a 76 or 77? I'm curious how hard it is to get them to pass smog.
The main thing I have to remember to do next time (2011 for me) is to dial back the initial timing to 6 or even 4 degrees BTDC. When I went in last year, it was set to about 10 (ie where it runs well and doesn't stumble off-idle) and failed for not being at the factory setting (6) and also for being slightly high on one of the measurements. Once I dialed it back for the free retest, it passed just fine, but ran like crap while driving. %)
I know you have to have a cat (or catS), and I'm guessing the stock air cleaner is important too, due to the heat riser and little vacuum gizmos all over it. Also pretty sure you have to leave the 2bbl carburetor on, because every time I look at aftermarket carbs in catalogs like Holley or Edelbrock, they're always accompanied by a paragraph about "legal for pollution controlled vehicles in California
only on vehicles which had a factory option of a four barrel carburetor."
Headers? Don't know. Perhaps as long as you run cats behind them you'd be okay.
Also, the Thermactor ("smog pump") has to be there and hooked up.
The other thing you have to watch out for is if you have dual gas tanks. For whatever reason, vehicles with two tanks aren't subject to the evaporative test in which they put a gizmo where your cap goes and pressurize the tank. Be sure to tell the tech that you have two tanks and they skip that part, otherwise it's likely you won't pass due to the way the fuel lines are routed through whatever switchover valve you have.
