I'm a long time Ford freak, had an early Bronco about 15 years ago.
Psyched to have one in the herd again. I'll post some pics when I get it cleaned up.

That is a nice looking 77, but it has to be smogged. Any of you Cali guys have a 76 or 77? I'm curious how hard it is to get them to pass smog.

As long as you run the original equipment it isnt too bad. You only have to meet your year's standards so if equipment is working you should not have an issue. The problem comes in when you want to soup up the motor and free up the exhaust. Thats when you start having issues. The main reason people dont pass (at least initially) is due to the visual.

Back before the rolling exemption I used to have to pass mine, was a pain but mostly because of the visual. It wouldnt bother me if they made all cars get smogged but get rid of the stupid visual inspection, if the issue is the hydrocarbons that are put into the air, why would it matter what was under my hood. Just check the tailpipe.

Congrats on the buy, Teddy, looks like a very nice EB!

Now for an emissions hi-jack: CA's smog laws would be a lot more effective towards reducing pollution (if that's their true intent) if they would stop with the visual, "production-correct" inspection and just rely on the sniffer. Of course that's my opinion & I could be wrong. End of hi-jack.

I have a smog setup that I think is complete from a 76 I'd sell. No cat. Let me know if interested.

Nice score, Teddy. I'll be bugging you with PMs soon. That beauty looks real untouched. I'd be interested in chatting with you on emissions and vacuum hookups in the engine bay of that beauty. Got a '77 Decor myself (Light Jade) that will not be Cali smogged, but I am interested in how some stuff was set up originally. '77 had a pretty vacuum crazy Autolite on it. Looks like it might even have original exhaust on there. Congrats on the sweet find.

So what you are saying is if they see after market headers they fail you?

Not necessarily. The emissions equipment was kind of all over the place on the Broncos as well. I had more equipment on my 67 than most later models. Typical stuff to do is EGR, Smog Pump, Thermactor valve, Cat (76-77), vapor recovery, not sure what else. Those are the main ones. My 67 had all but the cat and recovery. My 76 had all those goodies.

You could run headers, even a 4 bbl (depending on who is doing inspection) and get away with the inspection sometimes. There really is some subjectivity to it to be honest. Some places will do a pre-inspection, best to make some friends that know of shops that will give you a tip sheet of what to be sure is in place.

Oh I remember now! Back in the day when I took my '65 Mustang in I had to change the air cleaner to the stock one when I got it smogged. Just so the guy thought it was "stock"...not that the chrome valve cleaners or headers gave it away, but for some reason they clued in more on the air cleaners...glad they moved the year to '75!

The main thing I have to remember to do next time (2011 for me) is to dial back the initial timing to 6 or even 4 degrees BTDC. When I went in last year, it was set to about 10 (ie where it runs well and doesn't stumble off-idle) and failed for not being at the factory setting (6) and also for being slightly high on one of the measurements. Once I dialed it back for the free retest, it passed just fine, but ran like crap while driving. %)

I know you have to have a cat (or catS), and I'm guessing the stock air cleaner is important too, due to the heat riser and little vacuum gizmos all over it. Also pretty sure you have to leave the 2bbl carburetor on, because every time I look at aftermarket carbs in catalogs like Holley or Edelbrock, they're always accompanied by a paragraph about "legal for pollution controlled vehicles in California only on vehicles which had a factory option of a four barrel carburetor."

Headers? Don't know. Perhaps as long as you run cats behind them you'd be okay.

Also, the Thermactor ("smog pump") has to be there and hooked up.

The other thing you have to watch out for is if you have dual gas tanks. For whatever reason, vehicles with two tanks aren't subject to the evaporative test in which they put a gizmo where your cap goes and pressurize the tank. Be sure to tell the tech that you have two tanks and they skip that part, otherwise it's likely you won't pass due to the way the fuel lines are routed through whatever switchover valve you have.

I wouldn't count on that. The CARB and BAR are increasingly cracking down on shops that don't follow the letter of the law, and imposing huge fines and/or license suspensions or revocations.

They also keep making the tests more stringent and changing the rules from year to year. That's why my friends who have a repair shop got out of the smog game completely, and just use a Test Only shop for their customers' cars.

I saw this today, but forgot to write down the phone #. He's asking $9500.00 It was very original and in good shape with a few minor dents and some wear on the interior. If I had the flow right now it would be in my driveway. If anyone wants me to get the phone # I will go back and get it.

SUPER SWEET! DID YOU GET A PHONE NUMBER?

My 75 was a pain to smog 15 years ago! It was considered a federal model vs being a state model. Apparently federal models did not have a cat, and state models did. It said federal on the tag inside the glove box. This info was passed on to me by a shop, and they told me to never lose the tag, because it was the only thing that designated it a federal model. Everytime I had to have it smogged I would end up trying to explain why I didn't have a cat. That was one of the reasons I sold it. I thought the state would make it even harder for me to pass as the smog requirements got tougher.

Who would of thought they would make 75 and older exempt.

I had a 68 mustang with a "little bit" of cam in it. In 1989 I had to plug off the vacum advance, and retard the spark to 3 degrees BTDC. Factory setting was 6 if I remember correctly, and I ran it at 15 normally. It would hardly idle at 3. Back then you were required to retard the spark half the factory setting! It never made much sense to me.
