Lucky me, found a 96 Explorer at a local Pick n pull, cheap GT40 heads…score…but after getting all the crap off so I could pull the valve cover I found a big cast GT40P…I should have looked at the spark plugs first..so did Ford maybe start using P heads late in the 96 production run? or was this a motor swap? By the way, its still there, along with another 96 with a complete motor. Pick n pull I-20 Walton Walker Dallas…

That's strange. I didn't think the P heads came in until mid '97. Could have been an engine replacement or head swap. Who knows? Maybe the yard got it wrong and it was really a 97.

Shouldn't have been factory that way. I actually encountered the opposite when pulling my 4r70w, an early 98 Explorer that had GT40 heads.. It should be as mentioned by Broncodriver99, mid 97 is when they supposedly switched.

Hey there is also a P on the outside of the head by the outer exposed head bolts as well. The P heads are pretty good flowing heads and provided you use the right manifolds/headers its not such an issue-- you also widen your search and can get 5 year newer engines as well.
