I thought my waterpump gasket was bad, but after further inspection it is the gasket up against the block. My questions:

1. What is the piece behind the waterpump called?

2. Do I have to take off the crank pulley to get it off to replace the gasket?

I have replaced waterpumps and alternators but have never been any deeper into the engine. The help is appreciated.

thanks
matt

It's called the timing cover and you have to remove the crankshaft dampner, fuel pump, along with most of the engine's front accessories. You also have to loosen the oil pan and take out the front 6 bolts of the OP. It takes about an afternoon to change the gaskets on the timing cover.
