Additional things to take with Explorer motor

Hi everyone,

I may have a lead to pick up a '96 Explorer 5.0 motor this weekend. I was wondering if you guys can help me out with some basic questions:

1. What misc. things should I take, in addition to the motor? ex. sensors, hoses, wiring, etc. I would hate to return back to the seller to pick up forgotten items.

2. If I only plan on removing the intake, Serpentine set up, and heads, do I need any special tools/pullies to acquire the parts?

3. Any good advice on how to pull an engine? I have never done it before and I would greatly appreciate any info.

if you just plan on taking the front dress, you'll probably need a harmonic balancer puller. if it were me, i'd just yank the whole thing and the harness. what about the trans, is that available too? also, does it have hydroboost?

WHat a PAIN!!! I just stripped a 1996, took a day to get the engine unbolted, every bolt was a pain to get to and get loose. Pulled the engine and dropped the trans in a couple hours the next day though. The main engine harness connects to the trans so to pull the engine I had to completely pull the harness off the engine. Remember it has the good GT40 heads so grab the whole engine.

Wow that bad hugh? Any additional advice that will make removal of the engine any easeir? I will probably begine removal of the engine around 2pm, therefore every second of time spared will be helpful before it gets dark.

You need small hands to get to anything. I had to remove the upper intake to get to the top bell housing bolts, to get it off I had to jack the trans so the rear bolt would come up past the firewall. The 2nd from top on the drivers side hit the firewall but came out enough for engine removal. The fan takes the special tools, I had to borrow them. It was easier to remove the ehaust from the first joint than the manifolds.

Thanks for the good info! What type of tool do I need to pull the fan off? I do no want to ding or bend it while removing the engine.

It is a special tool that is a big flat wrench and then a big fork wrench that fits over the bolts on the wp to keep it from spinning. I have only done 2 and both were a PITA. Is there a way I can remove the fan without the special tool?

I doubt it. It was a fight with the tool. I still had to remove the fan to clutch bolts to get enough room, but my fan wasn't a tad bent too. I think Autozone will rent it to you.
