I dropped my rig off at a muffler shop today. I don't know much about the cost of exhaust so I'm hoping you guys can tell me if I'm getting a fair deal or not.

I already have headers installed and the previous owner of my rig had bought a muffler and he had the flanges to mount to the headers. So basically all the shop needs to do is run the pipe. The guy told me that most likely I will need to a cat converter too since the CO laws state that anything after '75 has to have one (damn hippies). Mine is a '75. He is going to verify with the emissions office on Monday whether or not I can get by with out one or not.

Anyways he gave me a rough estimate of $450 with out the Cat converter, and $650 if it needs one. That is for a 2 into 1 set up. What do you guys think? Is that a fair price?

I paid $80 for a two into one set up. I provided the muffler and installed the headers before taking it in. No cats required in Oregon for anything older than '77. I've used the same little shop for all my exhaust work over the years.

Just had a dual 2 1/2" system with h-pipe and 2 new stainless mufflers done in SoCal(most expensive place in the country) for $425 from headers back with all new hangers.

Ouch kinda high, depends on the quality and workmanship.

I had new two into one exhaust put on my stainless headers a couple months ago. I would have to get the bill out but I am sure it didn't come to $300, and that was with the stainless tips and was (from the looks of it) alot more work than just running the pipe back.

I'd have to say that's a fair price if it includes a new cat too. That's the bulk of the cost (or at least $100 of it) I would say.
First thing though, your EB might not have had a cat when it was new. I can never remember if the transition year was '74 or '75, but CA Broncos got one the first year, then the other 49 got theirs the next. But they got them the year AFTER most cars did I think, due to them being "utility" vehicles and therefore considered under the Truck standards.

Easy way to tell though, would be if your gas tank has the restrictors (or they've visibly been torn out) and has a "Unleaded Fuel Only" label on the speedometer.
If it's got either of those, and was not a CA truck, then it's required to have a cat.

Didn't know they could make you install one though. Like all things like that though, it's an individual jurisdiction issue. Around here, we're supposed to have them of course, but an exhaust shop should be able to re-do some tubes as long as they don't remove an existing cat.

Good luck.

In Colorado if you have a 75 and older and get Classic Plates no Emissions are required but you will have to pay registration Fees for 5 years up front. Well worth it!

Motor vehicles that are model year 1975 or earlier or motor vehicles with a model year 1976 or later that were registered as a collector's item prior to September 1, 2009 which are not to be used in a commercial manner. All taxes and fees shall be five times the annual taxes and fees normally assessed.

On a side note I just had two Broncos done in the last year at Exhaust Pros off I25 and 116th for $350 each with mufflers.

I paid about 700 for a complete 2-into-1 system at a shop not too far from you. They did everything behind the headers and the price included a Flowmaster 40 muffler, new hangers, but no cat. He did some fancy stuff but also neglected to realize that the clearance in my 351 oil pan was for the axle, not the exhaust.

I suppose the moral of my story is that it's good to shop around and not blindly trust a shop. Wish I had had my brain turned on at that stage.

I'd say that price is pretty high. I had my 2 into 1 setup done for $340 + tax. That was everything from the exhaust manifolds back including a Magnaflow muffler. Your quote was $100 more and doesn't include the muffler.

Ask if the $450 includes the lube for the screwing you are getting. I drove my Bronco to the exhaust shop with headers installed. I provided the flanges to the headers as well. I bought two mufflers from them and had them run true dual exhaust from the headers back and it was less than $250. Quality work too.

I paid 150$ for duels out the sides, in front of the rear tires with glasspacks. Sounds high to me.

I had headers back (no cat) aluminized 2 1/4" into one 3" they provided the muffler. I think the cost was in the range of $300. However, that was 5 years ago so with the current economy they might be dealing more now.

Ripped.. Hell buy you a mig welder for less than that, some mandrel bends on ebay, and do it yourself and have the welder left over.

I think it's too much if you already have the muffler. Ca. is the most strict state when it comes to emissions equipment, but even here, a 1975 vehicle is exempt.

The part about having been registered as a collector vehicle prior to Sept. 1 2009 worries me. What if it hasn't? I can't find anything on the Emissions website to answer that question.
