I'm glad you guys said go with that for him, because that is what my Dana 44 pattern looked like on Friday and I went with it. Was hoping I was correctly comparing mine to some pics I had.

That looks good. Reprint is the same on the gears you didn't mark? If it is then good to go.

Yes, reprint in same. End up putting it together yesterday as I was in a time crunch trying to make Wild Horses event, glad everyone thought it was good to go! Thanks...

Ok, went to take it for a drive and ended up with a totally unrelated problem, after tracking down a fuel starvation issue, ended up going through a carburetor I just rebuilt two years ago. So much junk in todays fuel. Once resolved, got it out for a drive. I have a speed related whine from the rear end. It has a low turbine like sound to it, it's more prevalent on the coast vs drive (even accounting for engine noise on drive). Sounds centered in the diff, so thinking not the axle bearings. Thoughts? Pinion or diff bearing preload issue? Pattern issue?

I have only put about 10 low to medium speed miles on it. Ok to drive? Will it resolve itself or do I need to tear down and redo?

Looking for comments from diff experts.

Thanks...

Bummer, was hoping this one would make the Wild Horses event tomorrow.

What was the backlash spec printed on the gear? Typically .006 - .009 but depends on the gear manufacturer.

My first thought it tighten up the backlash. The somewhat sharp cut off of the pattern could be the extra lash.

I know in the past for me with some gears I had installed I had a slight wine at first, after about 500 miles it ant away, changed the fluid and never had a problem sense. I attributed it to new gears and initial wear in. When I changed fluid again several years later, they were polished like a mirror and I abused them hard off road. Even initially the shop that set my lash tight , I recall they said 25% tighter due to my intended use.

Set up info:
Ring Gear run out check .001
Backlash .008-.009
Pinion set up with crush sleeve, nut torqued at 150ftlb, preload with seal at 23inlb (used the set up based from the Bronco Shop Manual, which lists preload at 22 - 32 with seal, the gear manual listed it as 13-15inlb without seal)
Diff set up with moderate drag (adjusters set to free spin, then tighten so spinning the ring gear stops after a few rotations).

Case spread with new bearings should be .008 to .012".

Ok, took it all down. Pinion bearing races seem to have some premature wear for ~20 miles. Had a little metal in oil. Replaced those, went to solid pinion spacer vs crush sleeve and put it back together with these settings.

Ring Gear run out check .001"
Pinion set up with solid spacer, nut torqued at 175ftlb, preload at 14.5inlb without seal, rechecked with seal at 22inlb
Case spread .012"
Backlash .007-.009"
Moved pinion .002" further in based on pattern check.

Took it for a drive, still have a whine. At a lose of what to do at this point.
