Right now, it's the latter. I think in September I may have some time again for this project and more.

I was suprised to see this truck on Saturday.

Looking at it a little, I think Andrew could write a whole volume on creative previous owner modifications.

By the way, I'm thinking that "creative" might be the most polite way of saying "Holy crap! Look at that!"... There's some interesting stuff on there.

Turnbuckle City, huh? Pretty good stuff. He did a good job disguiseing it. My favorite is the roadmap to all the goodies inside. On the inside of the console he made this map to his spares...the best. He was a TRUE Bronco owner and pretty proud of his "Strombie". I"m actually glad he had hold on it, tho as it is well preserved and fairly intact in that all the body panels are the Orig Stroppe truck, etc. Here's the blue under the tan on the hood. This truck was blue over orange as that was the scheme 68-69.

Great stroy Andrew. I talked to Bobby Unser and his beautiful wife Lisa, when I was down in San Carlos Mexico, last October. The story of the Mint 400 is pretty much just how he told me the story. He also said that PJ and BS rolled their Bronco 3 times that race. Bobby said that Al was driving and they were 40 miles out on the 80 mile loop when they rolled. They walked for hours in the dark before getting picked up by someone. His back was bleeding from being rubbed raw from the low back buckets and rough suspension. Since Parnelli and Stroppe's Bronco was out of commission Stroppe wanted Parnelli to take over the driving in that Bronco. He was pretty pissed of about the situation so he told of PJ, BS, and his brother and told them he would never drive for them again. Just thought I'd share a little knowledge I have on that Bronco since I know you like to know all the history you can about your Bronco's.

C, that is OG paint right? Sweet Baja. I still have that pic you sent me of it with the smoothie chrome wheels back when I was at UCSB and you had just gotten it.

The hood was painted blue, as you can see. You can see where there are chips on the hook that it's black underneath. Some chips on the orange show more orange underneath. I think its the OG paint but the orange under the orange makes me wonder if it was repainted at one point, but I'm no expert. I'll have to as the family to see if anyone remembers. I remember sending you those pics a longtime ago. I think I'd only had it for a couple years then. I love it it was a daily driver untill 2000. I still drive it every chance I get, although not as much since the gas prices have gone up. I took it out on a pretty fun trail Saturday night probably a 3.5-4. Took about 3 hours and had no problems. 154K and still reliable, a little tired but works untill I figure out what I'm going to do about it. You always find the sweetest Broncos! The trailer racer is one of my favorites. I'd like to start a Class 3 EB eventually.

Here's an update on the Unser Brothers Stroppe Bronco. Actually with what I'm uncovering with the paint and the photos I have collected, I should probably call it something else, but Unser will do for now.

I've found where the old cage mounted as well as the spare tire bar support. I couldn't keep from doing some paint removal too and here are the results.

Like the Red Racer that Todd and I own, this one appears to have started life as a red roadster. Talking to Willie Stroppe he says none of them were roadsters to begin with (RR VIN is U13), but in any case, a red Bronco. As I remove layers, I'm finding it was red factory paint and had a blue lower paintjob at one time, so Red/Blue first. Also found some white on the lower body as well as the upper, but after that first Red/Blue. Finally it had the late 68-69 Stroppe paint scheme of Blue over Orange with a white stripe spearating the two colors at the belt line. Check out the photos.

Also found that the previous owner had covered over the original air baffles to the radiator. I removed the newer aluminum to expose the damaged original pieces. They've also been trimmed here and there, so I'll have to look at Red Racer and get an idea of what is missing. Only as a guide tho as the Red Racer got updated as she went whereas this one stayed roughly the same from '67-69, and then was left as-is, and possibly in wrecked condition til '81.

Lastly here's the exhaust coming thru the rocker. TOo cool. The PO did a turn down pipe before the rear bumper, so it brings fumes in. I'll try to remove the aux tank soon, and use some small mufflers and run the pipes back thru the body sooner than later.

i'd love to see pics of all the spare parts stashed around the bronco, and/or a more clear pic of the "map".

While the PO mods are intriguing on this truck, I've been busy removing most of them. I took pictures and may post in a different thread. Meanwhile I"ve found some neat pictures from the race with the Unsers in the '69 Mint I thought I'd share.

I've also taken some more photos since the top has come off and found some neat paint underneath the makeshift doors and top.

Paint layers show down to factory red. Appears to have been Factory Red with blue lower body, then repaint red with blue lower, then Orange with blue upper body(all schemes had white stripe splitting colors).

Some tar paper covering a plate where the rear cage braces cut into the space where the factory fuel filler goes.

You can see the the 4 roadster mirror holes in bondo in the fender. Vin on Frame is a U13 prefix.

My favorite angle.

A little update on this racer. I just pulled it out yesterday for a leg-stretch. Here are a couple shots of it: One from September with another winning truck, the 76 Class 8 Baja winning F250 of Mike Burke/Ron Sloan - now undergoing resto in Socal. The 2nd picture is my favorite action shot.
