Is there a performance advantage by running the Y before the muffler or running dual in / single out muffler?

Hey JR
I used to run a muffler like you posted before I installed the NV 3550 in my truck. With the NV3550 there was just no way to make that muffer work, which is why I changed to what I have now.

I talked to a engineer at Magnaflow about those 2 in 1 out muffler last spring, when I put my 5 liter in. They are actually designed to be a 1 in 2 out muffler, so people can run two tips out the back of the vehical using one muffler. Though the engineer said they could be turned around to work as a 2 in 1 out.

While it sounded pretty good, the single in, single out muffler sounds much better. I don't really thing there is much of a difference performance wise, but the sound of my current setup, just blows my old setup away.

Here is a pic of my old 2 in 1 out muffler

I ran mine myself after getting the run around from a couple of local shops. I kept the pipe as close to the radius arm mount as I could to help keep it out of harms way. I tucked the muffler up behind the rocker, then turned out in front of the tire. That worked well till I bobbed the rockers. Now the muffler (one chamber Flowmaster knockoff) is the low point. I also added a resonator tip my import buddy gave me. It is surprisingly quiet now. I can now hear all sorts of rattles and squeaks.

I plan to come out in the corner protecter, much like Davis has done....
Bill, you gonna leave one side to cook spaghetti on aren't ya?? If not for your floorboards, the dish may have never reached it's level of fame on the trail!

you guys think I could run this super single set up, 2.5" into a 3" and 3" out with just factory 87 5.0 manifolds? Or will I need to run headers?

OK - here's the super single set up I got installed yesterday. Non-polished stainless Magnaflow dual 2 1/2" inlet and 3" outlet. But he used 2 1/4" from the headers to the muffler and 2 1/2 out the back. I changed him from 3" after the muffler to 2 1/2" based on comments here to maintain a bit of back pressure.

I did run it out the back instead of out the side behind the tire. I run with no tail gate and an open back half cab most of the time and I have not had any trouble with fumes. The old system just dumped right behind the rear diff and no fumes and the new pipe goes about 2 feet farther back. I was more worried about keeping it from getting smashed coming off ledges.

Sounds awesome - quieter than I thought it would be (which I like) but a nice snarl when I get on it. ;D

Here's some pics.

Over the frame

Do any of you guys have problems with the floorboard getting hot when you run the exhaust over the frame? I just installed a 3" body lift and would like to go this route but I dont want to bake in the cab!

It makes my bird dogs dance in the summer and fight over the spot in the winter.

Doesn't bother me though. I crossed near the front of the gas tank. Kept several inches away from most of the muffler. The floor board heat from the engine is more of a problem than where I crossed the frame.

Looks good, those long tube headers make it a little trickier than with the shorties

Don: I did talk to him about using the single-in, single-out Magnaflow you suggested, but he had already ordered and received the dual-in muffler from when I originally talked to him - and it came in in SS. They charged me the same price as the aluminized one they actually ordered. So I just went with it.

Looks like a nice job and its tucked up real well.

Now the big question..... How does it sound?

Kanter: He did tuck it up real well. Only about a half inch of the bottom of the muffler sticks down below the frame rails. It does sound good so I'm happy with it.

Looks nice Gary!
As long as you don't come down on that exit you should be ok. It looks like he has that tucked up there pretty well. But dem rocks have a way to get up in there....looks like the same spot Bill's comes out. I remember prying it back open with a prybar at the 40th...I really like the look and fit of that muffler. I am tempted to put the two flows I have on the streeter with the new duals off the 68 and use a magnaflow on the trail rig.
I really like the stainless and they do sound nice.
I want something I can turn up at least partially on edge, so it doesn't reverb so bad off the floor of the truck. When my F250 was done, we stood two flows next to each other and welded them together.
Sounds mean when you get on it , but hardly and cab noise.
A lot of the sound energy is directed horizontally instead of up into the floor and down to the street and back to the floor....That is the pipe size I wanted to run, I would like your feedback on that after driving it a bit.

Plug for Shop

I got this done at AA Speed and Custom in Woodbridge, VA (just south of DC). This is an NVA speed shop that's been around a while. They're usually Chevy guys - but for some reason they like Broncos and they do a lot of work for the local Ford dealer on Mustangs. They put a lot of cat-back systems on brand new Mustangs. I had them do some muffler work on a 93 convertable a while back. Anyway what was cool was that Dan, the owner and muffler guy, was real excited about doing the work. He sort of challenged himself on how nicely he could tuck it up as high as he could.

When I got there to pick it up it was already off the lift but he made me crawl underneath so he could point out everything he had done. I am always impressed with people who take pride in their work - you don't see that much now-a-days (commercially).

So if you need some exhaust work in NVA or DC area check them out - talk to Dan or Patty.

I have a super single exhaust system with a large magnaflow that has a 3" exit but the guys at the muff shop put 2 1/2 exit instead of 3. Would i get a better sound, deeper/louder roar, with a 3" exit ? Just curious! I would like a little more volume on it.

Scoop. Looks great your shop did a good job plus I like the way you exited it. I run mine the same way and it works great and like you mentioned no fume problems. So hows it work compared to your old set up;)

Yes opening it back up to the 3" will give you a bit more volume but thats about it. Its your large magnaflow that is providing the end result in sound. You can take your same set up and swap out different brands of mufflers and will find you can tune your sound all the way from mild to deep tone to straight up LOUD! depending on how they are packed, baffeled or chambered ;D
