Any inexpensive way to get title these days?

Bought my 74 as a really rough mud truck way back in the day for $300. No title and back then,
didn't really care as it was going to be a radical non streetable offroad rig.

Have heard the ability to get titles through various means has either dried up, or they charge
a significant fee, like some percentage of current average retail.

Retirement coming up in the next couple years. Thinking of fixing my 70 up pretty nice and
closer to stock, then make the 74 into the mild offroad beater I was building the 70 into.
Would still need to register 74 though,

Depends on what state you live in.
Go to the local DMV and ask them. Really, that is your first step.
You will get tons of advise on the net, most of it wrong/bad/not correct for your state.

Can you still read the VIN stamped in the frame rail? That will be important.

Hey Ox, the guys at Blue Rocks moved there office a few years ago and somewhere in the mess they lost 2 or 3 titles. There was at least one that they had never transferred into their name. Last year they found someone that advertised on FB for that sort of thing. He was up in new England somewhere. He runs them to check for stolen, etc. It took a while but he came through, cost them a couple hundred. I'll talk to them tomorrow and get the info.

Here in CA there are "independent DMV consultants" who offer DMV services and know way more than any of the worthless keyboard jockeys at the DMV. I've used one local to me three or four times over the years. Under $300 to get a title for a vehicle that's out of the DMV system. Well worth his fee to not have to set foot in or call the DMV.

There's likely a similar type consultant in your state.

I did that here in New Mexico. Small private DMV office that specializes in bonded titles. They do the vin inspection and the insurance company next door writes up the bond, I also had to get an appraisal for the bond value through their recommended appraiser. Once all of that is done they send it to the DMV and in about three months I had my title. I think total cost was $300 including the fees at the DMV to get the title.
