Any issues with using Fitech on a CA Bronco?

Went to buy the system from Summit Racing for my '74 Bronco which is smog exempt in CA, and got this message on their site:

what the what? 1965 or older only? Seeing as I don't have to get the truck smogged ever again, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, but found this to be odd...

You failed the test. Try again with a different answer

LOL...I know...but I thought it was odd just because my '74 is smog exempt. Not sure why it would say earlier than '66 given that fact.

Still illegal to alter emissions control devices. Just because you are not tested on an annual basis does not mean you are exempt. Never smogged again can also mean never driven on public roads again.

Got it...but does moving from a carb to an efi (or throttle body) set up really increase the emissions? I would be surprised.

It is not a CARB/EPA approved part. There is testing involved (way more than your local emissions testing station) to get it approved as an emissions legal upgrade. One of the more well known ones is the Subaru engine swap into a Vanagan. http://www.vanaru.com/faq1.htm
"Hobart Kennedy is generally credited with "inventing" the Subaru conversion in the US back in the mid-90s" ... "He even did the legwork to get the original 2.2 motor CARB approved in California"
It's not that different then an aftermarket company getting a cold air intake CARB approved.

There is nothing to worry about. I' ve been running various efi systems for 10 yrs. or more. Your not tested here so put on whatever you want on it and have fun.

The warning is automatic and comes with literally every product like this because of the '66 and later emissions control devices. The companies don't want any govt entity coming after them saying they're purposely defeating emissions standards.
They don't know where you are, or care. It comes in the box and online. In your case, yes Summit likely already knew you were in CA, but they don't care either. It's probably easier to just show it to everyone instead of just those with shipping addresses in CA.
It's not just CA residents that have to know that stuff anyway. Goes for a lot of different states.

If you don't remove or modify the existing smog control devices, you're good to go.
Even headers are almost legal if you don't modify your smog stuff. But not "legal" unless they have a certificate saying they've been approved.
Adding EFI may or may not be an automatic visual fail, but it would be in this case because it's also a 4bbl where no four barrel carb was ever available on a Bronco.

So like said, unless you get pulled over and spot tested for some reason, since you don't have to get it tested normally, you won't have an issue.
And besides, even if you did it's easy enough to swap back to a carburetor to test, then go back to EFI when done.
Bit of a hassle of course, but not the end of the world either.

By the letter of the law, yes it's illegal.
The pre 1976 cars are exempt from annual or bi annual testing but you are expected to leave your current emission devices in place and in working order.
Does anyone, No.
FYI, summit would not sell an ingition coil for my jeep TJ to me either.
It's all a political game, soon NV will not be selling ammo to CA residents either.

I totally missed the part where they wouldn't even sell it to you Tommy! Wow, didn't know it had gone that far.
We sell them here and don't have any restrictions from selling them, but Summit's pretty big.

And not that I wouldn't like to sell you one myself of course, but what happens when you put '65 Mustang" in your vehicle selection?
I'm guessing you'd be good to go for buying it.

Did you try that by any chance?
