Anybody ever try a swing away steering column?

Since tilt columns that fit our broncos are getting harder to find and more expensive, I'm curious if anybody has ever tried mounting a swing away column similar to the ones out of old T-birds? They don't seem to fetch much of a premium....

i had one of those in a mustang i had in high school

you referring to the column that tilted at an angle? think hal might be talking about the old early 60's t-bird column that the whole thing actually slid to the side. question is why in a bronco?

yes it did tilt to the side...

I have a backup spare for my GT350. It could be swapped in without much effort. When I looked at it though you have to have it out far enough to make sure the wheel does not hit the dash. The other reason I skipped it was you need vacuum, the storage can and the door switch to activate it.

Definitely doable but last time I looked they were fetching a premium above a manual tilt colum? That was at least the Mustang units.

Dunno, just another late night random thought really. The T-bird columns that came up on ebay while I was looking for a tilt column were all under $75, but I didn't track any of them to see where they ended.

I bet they ended much higher than $75. I thought it would be cool for deep fixed back seats, making it easier to get out and in.

Kind of like a snorkle mod, cool but not really necessary.

They came in Mustangs and T-birds both. Maybe in a show car for effect, but I don't think it would be practical (for me anyway). I usually grab the wheel to help pull myself in, and the swing away would just pull back into place before I got into the Bronco. Cool idea, though.
