Anyone convert Foot Parking Brake to Pull Handle?

I was looking to free up some space by the driver kick panel in order to get fiberglass kick panel speakers and roll cage in.

Has anyone replaced the factory foot parking brake with one of the pull handle parking brakes like in the 65-66 Mustangs? It is also similar to some Toyota trucks I think.

Any challenges or lessons learned? Thanks!

I would do this to my truck in a heartbeat if you can make this work. Maybe you should write a tech article as you work this mod...best of luck.

This has been dicussed.
Many good ideas out there.
The best idea is to have two different handles. One for each rear wheel
This allows you to make wicked sharp turns on the trail by engaging only one side
You will have more leverage if you use a floor mount handle like out of a focus or something.....

I used the Windstar floor mount brake. It took longer to put the parts together than to do the install. IIRC getfuzzy had some very good pictures on a post he did. He showed the pulley and cable system he used. I used the same basic idea and it has worked great for years.

I used one from an old school bus on my son's Bronco. It gives you a little more leverage and adjustability than the Mustang handle. It works on the Caddy rears, which take some force to make hold.

We mounted it on the right side in front of the t-case shifter so you weren't trapped inside when it was pulled like you would be if it was on the left by the door.

I used a pull/lift lever from a Fiero. Floor mounted between the driver's seat and the console. the stock front cable attaches right to it. An angle bracket, 3 bolt holes, and a slot for the cable had it up and running.

I have a Tacoma parking brake I'm getting ready to try. I already modified it to fit, just gotta hook it up.

Great, thanks. I was able to track down that old thread in case anyone was interested. I didn't think there would be enough room between driver seat and console but that looks great.

The 64.6 thru 68 Mustangs had them on the dash (Pull style.) I used a floor one for a mustang. It was either 78 or 79. The Fox chassis used the the Pinto\ Mustang II style for the first few years (that's what I have) and then they went to an auto adjustable one. Mine works pretty well, but it could use a little more pull, and less leverage. It holds well at 75%, and I prefer to be there at 50% pull. If you get one from a Mustang II or Pinto, be sure to get the plastic cover to male install a snap. The Lokar was similar in design, but a heavier price tag.

The old econolines from the '60s had those same adjustable levers. They can be adapted to fit under the dash,

Run a hydraulic parking brake. You can find them on the Internet. They are on eBay. Basically goes online with rear brake line. When you pull the handle it locks up the rear brakes.

Those are only good for getting out to check something (where a rock that you lost track is, etc.) and then only if you do not get under the vehicle and NEVER for holding position long term. Ever.

Hydraulics bleed down over time. How fast that bleed rate is can't be said, each system will be unique and the bleed rate will change with age.

Jamar "Park-Lock"'s are the cheep option for these, Mico-Lock's are what tow trucks use to hold the truck when winching a car up out of a ravine. The Mico-lock is a lot more expensive and is worth every penny, but it still isn't a true parking brake.
