AOD Art Carr shifting issues

I know there has been several discussions on the set up of the ART Carr shifter but hopefully some one can give me a 3rd grade level lesson? I seem to be missing something on the way I have my shifter or possible different issue with my transmission?

This is my set up, 88 351W with EFI setup, BC throttle and AOD linkage, 98 Grand Marque AOD with AA adapter from BCB and stock d20 transfer case.

Had AA adapter done with rebuild of transmission. I have the shifter reaching all the gates with no probelm, the probelm is that the transmission does not seem to be shifting . Have had the transmission out three times and checked over by the transmission shop with out finding a probelm with the transmission? On anotherr issue I seem to be have issues with finding 2H on the transfer case? So with all of that being stated if anyone has any suggestions or advice I am open to all of them at this point.

Thanks

Can you manually shift through the gears - I mean by getting under the truck and pushing / pulling the shift linkage? I have had problems with the Art Carr cable adjustment being too short - not the cable itself but the threaded end that connects to the shift linkage on the tranny.

I've never used an AOD tranny and an Art Carr, but imagine it could be the same problem. Without the adjustment reaching far enough it won't engage the gears.

Not finding 2HI is a common one. Usually the input gear is put on backwards. This is the gear that attaches to the spud shaft on the input of the transfer case. If it is installed with the teeth forward then the rear selector has nothing to grab when the rear is shifted into high range. Low range and front high will work perfect. Pull the transfer case off the adaptor to fix.

Now for the not shifting, little more detail. I can guess that you have 1st gear in (OD),D and 1. but only engine braking in manual 1. My guess is governor pressure. You lised it as a '98 grand marquis AOD, Well '98 the AOD was no longer made. So you need to find what year the case is, and which AA kit was used. There was a change made in '88 to the governor ports in the output shaft. That was done to improve lube flow to the back of the transmission. Get the wrong AA kit in the wrong case and I can see how you would not have governor pressure and no shifting. Keep in mind that the year of the case may not be the same as the year of the car. Lots of AODs have been replaced over the years. The car may have been serviced with a different year transmission.

After that it then comes down to putting all the pressure gauges into the test ports of the transmission and running the AOD diagnosis charts.

I apologize for the delay in replying back. I have been haveing PC troubles to go along with the shifting issue as well. I went back and checked the car the tranmission came from, it is a late 80s model not sure of the exact year? i can shift manaually but it does not feel correct. I do have the transfer case in 2h now.

I will go back and try again this weekend to see how much more damage I can do to it.

Thanks

AOD shifting

ps6123,

Your TV cable arm is not returning to neutral and this will cause the transmission to hang in first with no up shift. Place a throttle spring on the TV cable arm to pull it to the rear of the transmission and then take it for a drive. Once this works, have your transmission builder adjust the TV pressure to 35 lbs. If this is not done, you will smoke the transmission in less than 100 miles. Don’t ask me how I know.
