You don’t need the whole harness. Just the plugs that connect to the transmission. So if it fights you, cut them. Save the plugs.

Why does everybody say to get the 4R70W out of a explorer/mountainer? Any reason I should not pick up on from a 95 F150 4x4? The price is right if it would work.

Mine is out of a 95 F-150 and it is a AOD-E/W. That said, If you're going to buy an electronically controlled AOD, I would strongly recommend a 99+ 4.2 4R70W. That way, you won't need to upgrade anything unless you start putting down some serious power.

Well that is good to know. My 351 is a 385HP crate engine, so I should probably get the 99 and up? I guess the 4.2 has the windsor type trans bolt pattern?

jerks hahha.

Mlogan, that is a great link. However, can I use my current flexplate and the 99+ 4.2 torque converter? Or do I need a V8 TC for the 4r70w?

Oh man, that's one I'm not so sure I can answer (it's been a while since I did my swap). What comes to mind is that you need to use a flexplate that is for your engine and how it is balanced (internal/external, 28oz/50oz), from there you just need to make sure the tooth count is right. Not sure if it helps, but I think I used the stock flexplate on the back of my 5.8 (which bolted up to an E40D stock), and it was the right tooth count and bolted to the stock AOD TQ. Hopefully, some of the other guys can give you a better answer. Even if you can't find a stock flexplate that works, companies like B&M sell them. Generally, you want to use the stock TQ as the stall is pretty good for low end wheeling. Not sure if you joined, but I have a bunch of links to AOD swaps on my Yahoo group for AOD's.

Here-borrowed this-"The integral bellhousing AOD requires a flexplate
with 164 teeth (approximately 14 1/4" diameter with an 11 7/16" torque converter bolt pattern)"-from here.

The best I can answer is “I think so”.
The 3.8 core trans I once had used the same bolt circle as the 5.0, if I remember right. I don’t remember there being a difference other then fin pitch and k-factor (stall speed), if even that. I remember keeping the 3.8 converter in case I needed a core for a custom build, but tossed it when I moved out of the last house. Too many spare parts that were there “just in case”

Being the 4.2 is the stretched version of the 3.8. I think the V6 mustang people are even using the truck 4.2 as the big engine swap.

Now the flexplate will not swap. That I do know.

Sorry to butt in here but I thought this might be a better place to ask about an AOD then starting a new thread.
I found a 4x4 AOD out of an 88 bronco and I was wondering if any of you would know what a fair price for one of these would be.
Thanks and again sorry for the H/J.

I just went through this too. My understanding is that all the 4R70W torque converters are 12" with an 11.5" bolt pattern. You will need a 164 tooth flex plate with whatever balance your engine has (28oz vs 50oz) for a SBF. My stock 77 flex plate for my old 302/C4 works perfectly with my new 4R70W and 351W. Don't forget you will need a starter for an auto tranny if you previously had a manual tranny. My stock 77 starter (auto) works with the new 4R70W. Now if I could only come up with a crossmember and np205 support I'm happy with.

$100 tops, AOD's of that vintage are a dime a dozen and at a minimum (unless its an unusually low mileage unit) is gonna need a rebuild. In fact, I've had the opportunity to get a few AOD's that were that old for free, just to get them out of garage's. So, I really have a hard time putting a dollar amount on that.

Would this be the same for a 4x4 tranny which would save me money on not having to buy an adapter?
