I have the chance to buy an AOD from a 91 F150 - for $50 because it’s slipping badly.
Since I have to have my shop go through it anyhow, is $50 cheap enough?

TIA

AOD rebuild

tsmart,

When I had my AOD rebuilt back in 2011, it cost me $1,100 for the rebuild. I got the transmission for free, came with the donor car for my 5.0L EFI swap. $50 is reasonable for something you will have to spend over 1K to fix.

Did you get your transfer case adapter already for the AOD? Advance Adapters is the place to be for the adapters.

Good luck.

$50.00 is a good price considering you still need to have it rebuilt..

I would say that typically a rebuildable core, that you do not have to pull yourself, is $200-$300 from a yard.

$50 is about what a core value is. Having grown up with AODs and later the 4R70Ws, I wouldn't take an AOD if it were free. The 4R70W is sooooo much better it is hard to believe it is an evolution off the AOD.

There are 2 redeaming values for the AOD you have, it has a 4WD tailhousing and it is a later one with the better oiling. It might be worth $50 for the 4WD tailhousing and output shaft.

One of the smart guys on here recommended going aod but using 4r70 gears to avoid needing to buy a controller. I like the idea of less electronic sh*t.

It's a fair price. Does it come with the TV cable? is it the 4x4 or 2 wheel drive version?

If it is the 4x4 version and has the 6 bolt flange you can bolt a NWF doubler right up and it will bolt directly to your transfer case (assuming you want a doubler). As mentioned your going to have a good chunk of change in the rebuild with adapters, rebuild, drive shafts, cross member etc...

good luck with your build / decision.

Don't forget the price of regearing the axles so the overdrive will actually work and it will be drivable.
