Arizona Emissions and Engine Swaps -UPDATE (THANKS)

Hey Arizona guys. I recently moved from CA to AZ and now I have to get my 67 Bronco with a 289 and 2100 carb to pass SMOG! Got any pointers on how to make sure I pass? I did a tune up and a carb rebuild last week to make sure things are running as good as possible.

Does AZ do inspections like other states? Will they care about the fact that my windshield has a nice crack in it, or that the passenger header has an exhaust leak, or that my horn doesn't work?

Also, I can't seem to find much info on the legality of engine swaps in AZ. I plan to install a 351w with the Mustang EFI stuff on it before the end of the year. Will AZ care about it? Or will they just make sure it sniffs okay. I have heard that on the older cars, they don't even look under the hood.

Thanks,
Randy

UPDATE:
I just wanted to update you guys. I gave the broncoa tune up: new plugs, oil change, carb rebuild and tune. Then I finally got around to getting my bronco smogged and I PASSED. I actually passed by a good margin, too. The technician did not open the hood or test the gas cap (67s have vented gas caps). I was impressed that he even knew how to drive my stock 3 speed column shifter. Anyway, here were my numbers:

Loaded Test
HC 217 actual 450 max
CO 2.32 actual 3.75 max

Idle Test
HC 360 actual 450 max
CO 4.35 actual 5.00 max

As for getting the truck registered, they did not care about the crack running vertically through my windshield or the leaky headers or the fact that I have no horn. They didn't even check that all my lights work. Pretty easy, really.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to all you guys who responded.

For a standard emissions test here they won't care about the windsheild, horn or exhaust. (unless the exhaust is so bad they think it's actually skewing the tailpipe emissions)

I'd say if you've got a recent tune up and a stock motor running well there won't be any issue with passing the straight emissions test.

But I'm not sure about the inspection to register for the first time from another state. It's been 10+ years, but I seem to recall having them look over my Bronco pretty well when I first moved here. Someone more current might have to answer that one.

I'm assuming you've moved to the Phoenix or Tucson areas as they are the only regions in AZ that do emissions testing.

For a '67 truck, they won't even open the hood so they don't care if you have a 351W in it and whether it's fuel-injected or not.

I have a '69 and they check my VIN, look at my gas cap, and sniff the tailpipe at idle and cruise.

Randy,

Pima County (Tucson area) and Maricopa County (Phoenix area) residents are required to test for emissions in Arizona. If you live outside of these areas, but drive into them on a daily basis you are also require to have your vehicle tested.

Since you have a 1967 Bronco, the emission test facility will only check for the following; check to see if your registration matches your VIN number on your bronco, visually check your gas caps, and finally put a sniffer in your tail pipes / emission test.

You are still required to have any original OEM smog equipment on your Bronco if your Bronco came with it when new due to California / Federal smog laws. Again, the test facility will not look under the hood.

FYI - I heard that some people would add around 5% to 8% denatured alcohol to their gas to help make their tired engines pass emissions.

I own a 1969 Bronco with 5.0 with old Carter carb and C4 auto tranny. To pass emissions, I change my oil, replace my air cleaner, tune my carb, retard my timing to around 6 degrees, and raise my idle to around 1000 rpm in gear with automatic transmission. I pass without problems, but it runs like a turd. My 5.0 is still strong and not burning any oil.

You will not have any problems with regards to engine swaps with your Bronco in Arizona since they don’t lift the hood.

Good luck,
Sam

I do this trick as well. I add one gallon to about 1/2 tank of gas. Works awesome.

If you're not burning oil, a decent tune up should be enough. Emissions on older vehicles are pretty lax if I remember.

If you can't pass, move out of the city ;)

When I researched doing the newer engine swap i read that you are supposed to keep all the newer emmission systems. not really the case they only look for what should be on the vechile based on the VIN and year.

retarding the timing helps NOx and leaning the idle screw will lower idle HC.

I did not have any luck with alcohol.

I just drove mine though yesterday and passed. I don't bother removing cats or anything, it hauls ass just the same with all the emmision stuff installed.

I just did the emissions a couple of weeks ago in Goodyear. The engine had been sitting for 4 years after being rebuilt, but passed with flying colors. They checked the VIN, gas cap, and emissions at idle and load. It has a 351W and carburated and no problems at all.

The PO of my 71 EB smogged it with an efi'd 69 351, I never ran it through.

I put a 91 cummins in my 75 F250, they didn't give me any crap, and don't even pop the hood now.
