I'm possibly swapping my 72 to an automatic tranny. Is there any drawback to running the column shifter? I've already go a hole in the floor for the 4-speed shifter but was thinking of getting back some floor space.

The stock auto column shifter works fine. It's more a matter of preference as to where you like the shifter. I do prefer the floor shifter for wheeling. I find quick manual shifts (say 2 to D) a bit awkward on the column shifter and much easier on a floor shifter. But avoid any ratchet shifter - great for the strip but terrible for the trail. I like the Lokar shifter the best. Or a good gate shifter works well too. If you just do limited or mild trails then the column shifter is a good way to go.

I did a floor shift when I first put in the automatic. Few years later I was gathering parts to move it to the column. I prefer column.

I'm gathering parts now to replace my c4 with a 4r70w. Wanted a Winters gate shifter but could only find them listed for this transmission at TBP. Called to order and Jason informed me that they have been on back order since last November...ish. Now wondering if I should figure out how to use the existing column shifter or find another model of gate shifter.

I had WH put in an automatic column shifter when they put a C4 in my 1969 EB. Worked perfect for many years.

My last crawler had an Art Carr/Winters floor shifter but my street trucks have had column.
If you don't like the gates on the Art Carr you can grind selected ones or all of them off.

Give Wide Open Design a call, they don’t list it but bet that have what you need.
