while idling, my exhaust gets bad to a point where it can irritate your eyes.

What does this mean?

bronco isn't sealed well enough in the cab? bad seals will let that exhaust right in. I assume you are piping out the rear. If it's a soft top I've seen plenty of them that have a gap between the tailgate and the soft top rear window. If it's hardtop, I bet the liftgate seal is bad.

Usually incorrect timing or a carb issue like the choke is not working properly or its just jetted wrong. A proerply tuned engine should have almost no exhuast smell. Timing is one of the big ones as many people advance it to much and it prevent all the fuel from burning so unburnt fuel is in the exhuast and thats your smell.

Are you asking about exhaust smell getting in? Or are you asking about exhaust smell (like a carb issue)?

carb issue.
windows are down and zip windows are out.

I suspect the rods (qjet). Timing seems to be right in its happy spot but I'll try and mess with it. Again.

CO is odorless. You are smelling the HCs (or oil burning). Too rich makes the HC increase as does too lean. Adjust timing, verify no misfires, adjust mixture. I am installing a catalytic converter on mine, so I wont be smelling the exhaust when the top is off!

True, but if he's getting exhaust in his cabin, he's getting CO.

Yep without a cat, it's hard to run under 1% CO at the tailpipe. No matter what is really going on, top down, you will be exposing yourself to CO. Kinda why I mentioned the catalyst thing....

I agree. Aside from the emissions and holes in the body allowing fumes in, if the exhaust smell is that powerful (burns your eyes) it's likely running too rich. My was doing this and I ended up adjusting the fuel level in the carb bowls which was improperly set allowing too much fuel into the intake at idle.

Since you're smelling it at idle, it's an idle issue. I don't believe the rods in a q-jet affect the idle.

As AKwheeler says, it's the unburned hydrocarbons that are burning your eyes. And you can have excess HCs either because your running too rich (at idle) or too lean. There is that "lean idle misfire" thing that will cause your HCs to increase...

I went round and round with my EFI, convinced I was running rich at idle because of the smell. I finally looked at my plugs and they were bone white. Found the problem (MAF) and now it's perfect.

I'm outside the rig when I notice this.
My son is driving the rig.

I'm still having that popping sounds as I let off the throttle. As I lean a little into the throttle the popping goes away.
