Best bang for my buck paint gun suggestions?

I'm torn between rattle canning my bronco and purchasing a decent paint gun. This is a hunting/fishing and trail rig so I'm not really looking for a showroom finish and at the same time I don't really want the uggliest thing in town. I was hoping that if I went with a flat green rattle can I would get a half way decent paint job that would hold me over for a couple of years. But, if I can spend a little more on a paint gun and get much better results I guess that would be my preferred route.

Can anyone suggest a paint gun where I can get the best bang for my buck?

Just get a Harbor Freight gun. I have used them for spraying primers and Rustoleum paint you can buy in the quarts with no problems. They are almost disposable.

It's the disposable part that worries me. I'm looking for something that will last quite a while and won't break 5-6 years down the road. If there is such a thing.

Don't worry-- HF HVLP guns (about $20) shoot better than the some of the $300 guns... And they have disposable/replaceable paint cups... Been using one for a year in my shop... (4 full paint jobs, and much small stuff) Still shoots very good... How much painting you gonna do???? One can afford to throw a $20 gun away every couple years as opposed to a $300 gun that may last 10 years with minimal care.....

Sharpe makes a pretty decent gun which most gearheads can afford. The only problem with guns from Harbor fright is they give you the false impression you can spray paint efectively. . I would rather use a brush than waste my money and time with An HF gun. I have had to redo jobs more times because of crappy spray guns. A great paint job is 60 percent prep work and 25 percent spray gun...and 15 percent luck ....by the way....good luck!!!

I bought a Sharpe/Finex HVLP gun for my paint job. Might have been luck but I think I laid down a pretty decent paint job. My goal was a clean, decent looking fishing and trail rig that I could keep looking reasonably nice yet not stress too much about scratching. I do not regret spending the extra money on paint and equipment.

Scan craigslist - you can score a very nice gun for low money. As long as it is clean inside and out you know someone cared about it. If in doubt get the owner to spray some lacquer thinner through it to shot it works nice. I scored a SATA Jet 3000 for $200 versus $1000 when new and I have sprayed some really nice stuff with that.

If you are shooting primer the finish line is nice. Until you need parts then you throw it away like an HF paint gun. The finish line guns are not well supported.

There is no way to get proper atomization from a HF gun. Spend the money for a Sharpe or Devilbis and you wont regret it. I only use SATA's but they would cost you about $600 each. No matter what gun you get use HVLP fittings on both ends of the hose and the gun. HVLP guns neef alot of volume and a regular fitting only chokes the gun.

Devilbiss Finishline guns are a great beginner gun and have been compared to much higher prices Sata's. I believe I paid around $170 or so for mine, and shoot everything from primer to clear through the same gun. I just clean the ever living snot out of it and change the tip size.

I am confused. This guy was fixing to spray paint his rig with 12 cans of spray paint and I recommended to buy a cheap gun and spray thinned rustoleum for a stronger and more uniform look. Now the thread has turned to "You have to use a Devilbis gun" recommendations. By the way, I got my Devilbis gun for 40 dollars on Craigslist.

Well, I was thinking about rattle canning the bronco and wanted recommendations for a decent paint gun that would get me the most for my money so I could choose my path wisely. The information posted so far has really helped me with the learning curve. I dont mind dropping some cash on a quality paint gun. I just dont want to spend more than i need to. Thanks a bunch!

this is the gun i bought to spray my truck with.

http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraygundepot/devgfg670.aspx

have also used the sata 3000 digital for clear. alot more expensive. The deveilbiss gun works great. and is not overly expensive. alot nicer then the sharpe finex stuff or rhe deveilbiss lower end finish line stuff. At least in my open have used both of those also. just feels better in your hand and the componets feel better when cleaning. also if you buy a gun buy some sort of disposible cup system dkupps develbiss or the 3m pps

If you are between a rattle can paint job or a cheap single stage paint job with a HF $30 gun then the second route is correct-- anyone would say that even Allen I am sure. If you are talking decent paint with a HF gun or a $400 whatever gun then the choice is obvious.

This is my .02 worth. If you are going to spray Rustoleum then use a HF gun. If you were to use a SATA with Rustoleum the average joe wouldn't be able to tell the difference in the final paint job. At the rate
if you were to spend $500-$1000 (which is very easy to do) on paint you wouldn't want to use a HF gun but would want a good quality gun. Trust me when I tell you. If you use a cheap gun you will be able to tell and will regret it. Sounds like the op wants a decent gun to spray a mid grade paint job. Yes you want a mid grade fun to do that.

I bought a devilbiss finishline 3 with no cup for cheep. It came with 3 tips but the only one i have used is the 1.3. For $125 this is a bad ass spray gun! I cant compare to other guns since this is the only one i have ever used, but i can say that i havent had a run or any orange peel yet. I painted a bunch of stuff white and black and it turned out perfect!

Thats where i got it from and it comes with a regulator. Instead of the metal or plactic cup i chose to use the devilbiss dekupps system. Ausome upgrade to a ausome gun!
