Best method for removing old Hurculiner?

its not on my hootus, its on the floor of my Bronco.

Im leaping into the abyss of door post and rocker panel and floor replacement.

and removing the hurculiner I slathered in 20 years ago is the first step,
the best method Ive found so far is using a twisted wire wheel in a grinder, but that just mostly melts it off, makes a hell of a mess and smell.

Never tried this with bed liner, but have a mobile sand blasting guy come. I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to easily take it down to bare metal.

I hadnt even considered a mobile guy. I thought about having is sandblasted or bead blasted or soda or dry ice or whatever, but didnt want to pull the body off. as this isnt a full resto, I dont want it to be too nice, If i was gonna go that route Id just write the check for $15K and get a brand new tub. this one is loaded with rust and bondo,
the main motivation for this is the body started sagging so bad the doors wouldnt close.

plus my son just got finished with his 65 Falcon station wagon and wants to start on the Bronco repair.

Sins hidden under bedliner. Why so many people don't like that stuff.
Looks like they only did the inside of the tub, but still sucks. Getting it off really depends on how well it was installed. I see a patch that looks like it is peeling, maybe good?
Do evaluate the metal you are stripping, is it worth keeping?
Don't know if bedliner is the same, but I once accidently removed factory installed sound deadener by soaking it with ATF for a few months. Hauled a transmission and the torque convertor fell out and filled the spare tire well. Beater car, didn't care. Later I was in there and all the sound deadener had fallen off.

Citristrip.....seems to be th go to for bedliner removal. I've not tried it yet. Watched a video on it. Put it on thick, cover with plastic and let it sit. Stuff came right up in the video.

I've used airplane stripping spray with some success but it's toxic and will burn your skin.

Cheap Walmart paint stripper and CitriStrip is what I used. Walmart stripper worked the fastest and best, BUT it’s best used outdoor due to its nasty smell.

What is that in the door jamb? A mummified 1/2"x5" bolt?
Yep

They apparently welded in a bolt to get the right curvature to form the bondo over ?

They also welded some sheet metal in the front floor , and covered up the body mount bolt .

So I gotta use a hole saw to expose the body bolt
I may be able to cut the bolt with a sawzall from underneath and remove the floor

I used 80 grit flap discs on an angle grinder to strip the interior of my 77. It's a lot of work, like most Bronco things. :p

I have also tried the flap discs, the strip discs did a better job and less damage to the metal underneath. The strip discs last a while if you avoid sharp edges.

I used a heat gun and putty knife. Stuff came off fairly easy. Sanded the remnants afterwards.

I only had to do the inner rear quarters because I removed the wheels houses and bed floor with a body saw. New metal went in.

3M Scotch-Brite Bristle Disc 4-1/2 in. 36. These may be an option if you haven’t tried already the brown ones or most aggressive face shield and long sleeve as when the nubs break and fly off the can hurt,​

From looking at your pics you might be ahead at $1/hr for bodywork fees to cut that $15K check. Wow...

BTW, I've been here long enough to have a dang good laugh at the Hootus comment... I only hear it about once every couple years now but those that know... KNOW!! lol

Replacing the floor and wheel wells was probably faster than trying to scrape it all out!!


Some day I'll have to do this. I Herculined all of the inside of my bed portion and parts of my doors and front floors back in '00 or '01. Wears great and most (90%) of it still looks really good but I'm due for a change but don't want to go to the nasty effort of doing it! lol

I"ve used citristrip on bedliner with great results.

I wish I could swing the $16k
It’s really not a bad price for a totally new body .

Fortunately I got free labor .
And My sons helping work on it when he’s not at his job .

His job is intermittent,
But he gets $600 a week for being on call even if they don’t have any work .

And he likes doing stuff like this .
He just got finished replacing the inner and outer cowl on his 65 Falcon station wagon .

Every old Ford is rusted inside the cowl around the top hats for the air vents .
On the falcon and mustang you gotta remove the fenders and hood and windshield and drill a zillion spot welds and remove the cowl to get to the rusty spots , cut those out and fab new metal that’s all compound curves

The bronco is mostly all flat metal



And I’m not trying for a show truck

Just something that doesn’t sag so much in the middle that the doors won’t close anymore .

Mine is dented on every panel . That gives it character and I’ve owned it 30 years . Every dent has a a story .

Worst one is when a tree limb fell on it right on the front corner and dented the hood , fender and grille .
