Any opinions on the best place to get a replacement transmission? I am open to just ordering the transmission but I Would really like to have a place that would provide and assemble the transmission, adapter and transfer case. Any insight is much appreciated

Where you located? 4R70W or AOD or something else? Do you want someone to pull the old tranny and transfer case, assemble the new parts and put it all back in? You will most likely need to modify the mounts and buy new driveshafts as the overdrive transmission with adapter will be longer.

Depends on your budget at well.

Probably the best bang for your buck is the 4R70W, used out of a '98-01 V8 Explorer AWD model. Quick adaptor and the Bronco transfer case bolts right on, or a junkyard Ford NP205 can be hung without an adaptor (it's just bigger, heavier, stronger, and getting hard to find, not to mention most will have at least one wrong yoke).

Modified or custom crossmember, modified/replaced driveshafts. A controller to run the transmission. And if your gearing won't support the overdrive, new gears. Speaking of which, what size tires and what gearing will you be running. And what engine as well?

In short there is no quick overdrive transmission that is a perfect exchange for the C4 you have now. It is a very doable conversion, but not a single part swap to do so. On the low end about $1k if you sourced parts just right, did the work yourself, and scored some deals and sold the old C4 for a good bit of coin. Ramp that up to a high dollar build transmission, put all new parts everywhere, pay someplace to do the work, Have a high end shop do the work, it could tickle the $10k mark. It's all over the map. This is more custom work than part replacement so you would need to look for a fab shop that does custom work more than an auto repair shop that just replaces stuff that went wrong. So you even need to pay attention to the kind of shop that is doing the work if you farm it out.

This.
I keep flirting with an AOD of some flavor in my plans, but once you tip the scale and add the electronic controller (there are AODs that were on carb'd vehicles, but there's only 3 years or so so they're hard to come by in good condition) you might as well pull the engine and EFI from the donor too. Plus the mods to make the cross member fit and the new/altered harness.
In for a penny, in for a pound.

I’m actually going to replace the adapter and the transfer case. I have it tore down to frame now so I want to replace everything. The motor will be fuel injected with fitech.

I doubt there are any new transmissions left. You would be looking at reman. At that point your local Ford dealer is probably a decent choice. Order one for a '00 Explorer with the V8 and AWD. Get a US Shift controller for it. If you want a new transfer case to go with it you can order an Atlas that will bolt right to the transmission without any adapting. They are from Advance Adaptors.

Thanks. I actually like this idea. Do you know the specs of the atlas transfer case?

The specs of the Atlas will be your specs because they are built to order with lots of choices. To give you an idea as to what you are getting into with the Atlas here's a link to our Atlas builder and it will get you in the neighborhood for a price. https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/product/Atlas_Tcase/Bronco_Atlas_Transfer_Case

If you need help you can call it in. We do these frequently.
