Im new here and will post some info tomorrow after picking up my new rig. Im going to be doing an efi conversion. Im really familiar with Ford EFI (mustangs), but never got into automatic trans. Im going to have lots of questions.

My goal is street driven truck with 33's or 35's. 302 with nice top end. My chassis harness and fuel injection harness will be dieted by a friend who did another one for me. Truck will be street driven 95% of the time. For that utility would a 4r70w be a good fit and will the stock ecm control it well enough for my needs or will I have to get an aftermarket controller?
AOD good enough to fit my needs and be easier and cheaper?

Also, who do I see so many running the explorer front dress over the mustang dress?

Thanks!

Probably the best bet would be to get a later model 5.0 Explorer and use it as a whole package.

The Explorer front dress is used because it is compact and works. The mustang is much longer and it is difficult to get a good fan package with the mustang parts. The Explorer is capable of keeping an SUV full of mom, kids, and soccer balls cool sitting in traffic. It has a wonderful clutched fan that can move a ton of air when it needs to. It's just a nice overall package.

The trans I am going to say the 4R70W is the way to go. There are reasons even Ford gave up on the AOD. In all aspects of it, the 4R70W is better. To try and upgrade an AOD you find a 4R70W and take most of the internals, and when you are done, after spending even more money, you still have less of a transmission that the 4R70W. The lockup torque convertor, small and simple feature that every modern automatic has. On the 4R70W it is selectable and controllable, the AOD you don't get it in low gears, get some n 3rd, and it is always locked in 4th. Some of that is changeable depending on what parts you put into it during a rebuild, but how you build it is how it always is. The 4R70W it can be changed by powering a solenoid on or off. And that alone can be as good as adding another gear between the gears.
