Burning out Voltage Regulators

I never had a issue with my voltage regulator until I replaced my alternator.
Now it has burnt out 3 new regulators. It does not burn them out when it is running, seems to burn out at starting? The reason I know this is my elect. choke is hooked to the alt. and stays closed (high idle) if it burns out.
I have the Ford 1979 460 big housing alt.
Could there be a problem with the rebuilt alt?

First thing that comes to mind: Are you bolting them to the fender before you plug them in? If not, that can cause damage.

Yes I am mounting them first. Thanks that was one of the things I read in the archives
