Cheap, reliable, runs at all angles = Quadrajet.

The adapter plate is about $20, misc gaskets, some ingenuity on adapting your linkages and your set. Get a rebuilt unit off the shelf with a warranty for less than $150 (you're looking at $250 and up for a Carter/Eddy or a Holley), bolt it all together, and you're off.

I've enjoyed my Q-jet for a little over a year now. The only thing that might make me happier is when I go to EFI.

I'd avoid Vato Zone like the plague though, they've not been nice to me.

I Like my Holley TA 670, but if you read the tech article on the left you can make your own TA for less ;D

Keep your holley get a rebuild kit for it and rebuild it. Then you'll know quite a bit more about your carb and how to adjust it and if your going off road see my article in the tech article section on holley carbs

Get your Holley rebuilt or get a Q jet. I have been running an Edelbrock for 8 years now. It's fine on the street but off road it's junk. Always flooding out in off camber, steer ups and downs. Even after all the offroad mods I have done. I am looking to replace it now.

Not to hijack the thread, but what application would someone look for to get a rebuilt Quadrajet off the shelf for $150?

I say the Holley Truck Avenger, don't use your current wore out Holley as a basis to call them junk...did you buy your current carb new, or was it someone elses problem that you got stuck with. Any carb after it gets so old that the main rod bushings wear so much that it starts to leak fuel and air will cause you many problems. I like the Edlebrock for a street carb that you don't want to have the ability to tune it, they work good out of the box (as does the new TA), but the Holley has better upgradeability. The Edlebrock I had on a Heep ran great until you hit the brakes and turned, or put in on an incline..it would die. Some of my buddies have even put the spring kit in the needle valve and still have problems. Now the Holley as with many carbs don't like extreme angles..you need EFI for that, but I would put a NEW Holley if I used a carb. For the Quadrajet suggestion, I 2nd that they work better than the Holley or Edlebrock on angles, but you are taking a larger rear barrel carb and trying to adapt it to an intake with small rear barrels...now for a Chevy, these work great because the intake is designed for them, but on a Ford or any square bore intake I like using a square bore carb...it seems to run a little better.. I figure it is kinda like puttin a 4 barrel carb on a 2 barrel intake with an adapter...not quite that extreme, but you understand what I am trying to say... Hope this helps muddy the water a bit...LOL!

I have no clue what vehicle mine's off of, I got it in a trade.

Most GM vehicles that came with a V8 were equipped with a 350 came with a Qjet in the late 70's and early 80's. I've heard folks getting them for 305 Nova's and Camaro's, and I've heard of folks getting them for 350 Pickups and other big bodied cars.

I can get some numbers off of my carb, but it'll be Sunday before I can. Let me know.

I have never had good luck with Eldebrock carbs, especially if you don't drive the vehicle daily. I like my Holley, but I'd like to get a Q-jet soon if not EFI.

I think the manager at your local Autozone either 1) doesn't know what he's talking about, or 2) just want's to sell you a new carb, or both! %)

My first recommendation would be to fix what you've got. You've been presented with a perfect opportunity to learn something about carbs. There's a ton of techincal information about carbs on the Net, and most of it is specific to Holley carbs. You said you were on a budget. Rebuild kits, and whatever linkage is missing should be cheap!! Even paying a shop to rebuild it would be cheaper than a new carb.

If you're still going to buy a new carb, I suggest not getting an Edlebrock (aka Carter AFB Extreme POS). They were a POS 30 years ago, and absolutely nothing has changed. If Wildbill's had good luck with them, he's the Only one I know of.

What situations are you going to run on your Bronco? I was looking for Q-jet application, but it was going to cost me about $200 in the end. I just ordered an Edelbrock 500 cfm for mine from Jeg's for $225, but I probably won't be doing a whole lot of heavy off-roading.

I worked at a couple parts stores over about 3 year part time. It was amazing how many customers followed me from one store to the next once they realized I actually knew what I was talking about and would rather get into the books than use their stupid puter system. The best way to prove I knew what I was talking about was to have my Bronco, Mustang, or Drag car on my trailer waiting to hit the track or go wheelin when I got off.. Their attitude changed greatly.. I guess like most people they expected me to talk a good game..but when I proved it I gained their respect..

I too agree AZ sucks..I never worked for them...

Im looking for a carb that will be good for street and trail...not like rock climbing with carzy incline and declines, but something that handle some stuff...I think im going to just get a rebuild kit for this Holley and try to rebuild it myself...you guys are right it would be a good chance for me to learn some things about my own carb and carbs in general...since this is the first carb car Ive ever worked on...remember this car is 14 years older than me so we have some catching up to do...Thanks for the input guys...

P.S. I got the rig for 4000...what do you guys think? here are some pics...

I vote try the kit. Get a gallon of the carb cleaner so you can put the carb in it over night after you take it apart..that will eat anything in the hard to reach places. If it runs good enough to get you by for 6 months it has done its job so you can save up for a new Holley.. You can get a 600cfm standard Holley for about $230 or less if you catch a sale at your local parts store..and that would be NEW, not someone else's headache......

Oh, yes you did great for $4000...they are getting harder and harder to find so hang on to it..

walker949 I just checked out the Autolite 4100 and http://www.ponycarburetors.com I tell you I am tempted in one of them 4100's that they make into a 480 cfm carb.

If I go for one of those carbs I will sell you my 575 Holley Street Avenger pretty cheep. The Holley works awesome, for the street, or level types off off roading. It is only 4 months old, and I even have a offroad vent comming from Holley.

Looks pretty decent for $4K. FYI...The pic you have labelled as "Choke button?" is actually the high beam switch.
