I have a freshly rebuilt C4 with less than 3000 miles (built last summer). I went to drive it this morning and first thing while accelerating out the drive way when shifting to 2nd it revved then went directly to 3rd very abruptly. When I manually put it in second it went to neutral. 1st and 3rd work fine. I turned around and came home and checked the obvious, fluid level is good, not burned. I then took a look at the band adjustments the passenger side (low reverse?) looked fine, but the driver side (intermediate) was loose and the lock nut was about 1/4-3/8" out. I did a search and found this old thread in the archives. I figured I would try to adjust the intermediate band in case it just came loose, but I can turn the stud completely in by hand freely. So it sounds like I broke the intermediate band does this sound right? I drove it all day yesterday since my DD is in for service and everything worked fine although it seemed like there was a very slight flare during the 1-2 shift.
My bronco has been eating parts this summer and getting to be quite expensive. I still haven't fixed every thing that broke from my last wheeling trip a couple weeks ago (rear third member, rear R & P gears, rear driveshaft, both stub shafts, and front Detroit) I still have to replace or fix the Detroit and replace my spare stubs. To make things worse I just got through replacing everything that broke Memorial weekend (rear R & P gears, rear driveshaft, bent rear housing, and broke both front locking hubs). I really don't drive my bronco like an animal either I typically baby it around. Most of the recent problems were due to running a POS Currie High Pinion which is now scrap metal. I went to a standard 9+ nodular case and 35 spline ARB.
Thanks for any help and for allowing me to vent my frustrations:-[

Definitely a band problem. It might be broke but I bet the adjuster was loose enough that the band strut fell out. Only way to tell is to drop the pan and valve body.

Mine did this too, broken band was culprit. Mine had original style Ford bands, which I hear are not too good.

So assuming the band is broken, I should not drive it anywhere?
I am kind of in a bind because I towed my bronco down the hill (about 40 miles) on a trailer to drop off my truck for service. I left the trailer and was planning to drive the bronco back down to get the truck.

You may risk the band rubbing on the drum and contaminating the trans. My broken band had some strange wear patterns on the band when it was removed, this was likely due to driving it for 15 or so miles to get back to our rented cabin in Big Bear.

I second the strut popping loose suggestion. Get some fluid and a drain pan, and you can fix it where it sits.

;D Good News;D I finally got aorund to droppping the pan and valve body today and the band looks good. The struts had just fallen out when the adjuster came loose. I need to get some ATF and a pan gasket and it will go back together.
Thanks for all the help!
