I went to the DMV this morning and filled out the necessary paperwork to put the CA black plated on my 66 roadster. I have the plates and 1966 sticker and all went smooth. I was wondering if anyone had successfully done this and how long did it take to get approved or denied?

Thank you,
Kyle

I would like to know if they were the original plates from your truck too. I have a real set of blue plates for mine...but they are not the original plates from the truck as the truck is originally from Montana. I would love to know if I could go down to the DMV and get those plates "legalized" for my truck.

I don't think blue plates qualify for the YOM program. Pretty sure only plates up to 1969 (with corresponding YOM sticker) are eligible.

It includes both blue and black plates. I have already applied!! On the application it asks you if you want a personalized plate.

My thought was that since I have real blue plates from the 70's in nice condition...I could use the number on those plates for my "personalized' plate and then I would have real embossed plates on my truck.

If you car is '69 or later, California DMV will allow you to re-assign black and gold plates. You must have the correct year registration tag for the plate (i.e. a '68 requires a 1968 tag affixed to the plate). As of now Blue and Gold plates cannot be re-assigned and they won't allow you to use the old 6 digit style on the new plates.

12+ years ago you could keep blue/yellow plates as I was able to on my 69. The process took about 4 months as they had to verify my plates were clear, but it did work. I think the regulation # that allowed me to keep my blue/yellow plates was reg 17....but it was a long time ago so my memory is foggy. My EB was out of the DMV system completely when I put it in my name, and the blue/yellow plates I kept were on the truck when I got it so I don't know if that helped with me keeping them. Anyway....I just wanted to pipe up and say it is, or was, possible to keep original 6 digit blue/yellow plates.

So your plates were NOT the original plates from the truck??

I don't know if they were or weren't the original plates. They were showing on the expired registration card I got with the Bronco, and the old pink slip so they could've been original. I thought 69 model year would have originally had black/yellow plates, so that is why I'm uncertain if they're original to the Bronco.

I have blue and yellow plates on my 66 now. Sometime ago i guess it was re registered. The title and the plate # matched so they let me keep them when i registered it a month ago or so. I found original black plates that were clear (not in the system) and purchased a yom 1966 tag on line. I went down to the dmv today and it was pretty painless. The only thing is they wanted me to surrender the blue plates. I said no and had to fill out a form saying i would when the yom goes through. The first time at the dmv they made a big stink about the sticker. This time it wasn't an issue and they really didn't look at it. I just said i had it and they wrote it down. They looked at the plates and made me pay $45 and sent me on my way. I think a classic car looks best with the original plates. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!

I will add this to my first reply....the DMV union zombies did not want to let me keep my original plates. I went in with good info and had all my ducks in a row, and I knew the reg # to tell them how to do it. When they told me no at first, I gave them the reg # and they pulled out a book that looked like it hadn't moved in 10 years to find out the procedure. When you upset the cart for union zombies, their first reply is to say no, but if you're insistent and know your stuff, they will normally do their job.

You were able to keep those plates because you had paperwork (I.e. pink slip/registration) that showed those plates belonged to your car. Even if out of the system, if you have paperwork with the plate number, your good to go.

You're probably right, but I do remember their first inclination was to take the blue/yellow plates away and reissue me new 7 digit white plates. With the help of that regulation I looked up, it slid on thru....
