So I buttoned up my freshly rebuild D20 J shift and a little while ago I installed my JB twin sticks just to see what they felt like. Front side works perfect. H, N, and L. But on the rear I can only get H and N. I tried a number of different combinations with the front shifting first and no dice. So I pulled the inspection cover to see what is going on. When I try to shift into L it just stops like its hitting something, but its not. Got in there with my flashlight and there isnt anything visibly stopping the sliding gear from moving back. Like I siad, its a J shift so I didnt remove the detent rod but its feeling like that might have something to do with it. Any thoughts??

Now I'm no Viperwolf,
I'll ask, any pics, from when you cut the shift forks. Simple question have your tried reverse and then forward to mesh the gears?

I don't have any experience with the twin shifters but it sounds like a detent may be causing the shifting problem. Remove the detent springs and little metal ball from the shift rails (behind the plugs) and if it shifts OK. The front plug on the front yoke shift rail doesn't have any thing behind it. It's just the rear one on that side and the one on the other side of housing area for the shift rails. A shop manual will show this in detail.

After inspecting some shift rails I'm pretty sure you have the detent rod in the front hole. On the J it needs to go in the rear hole.

Awww man. Really? I was using the on line manual when I built it and that was for the T. I have the detent rod in the front hole because theres only one plug in front. I figured the springs and balls are supposed to use the two rear opposing holes. So are you saying thats wrong?

Yes. The springs and balls are correct in the rear holes but the rod goes in between the rails there too. The front hole is just a leftover from the T shift days.

Damnit. Thats what I get for being all cocky and thinking I had the build licked. And ofcourse now I have to pull everything apart just to get to those shift fork set screws. That really sucks.

If you can get to the setscrew on the front fork you can loosen it enough to pull the front rail out.

It needs to be in the rear hole. It keeps the rails from moving too far and crashing the sliding gears into the rear of the case.
