Here ya go!!! Long awaited pics comparing the lengths.

Updaye- this ARP HD shaft with the retaining clip in place does not allow enough shaft end play. .

I ordered the Melling unit since it is a typical hex shaped shaft from top to bottom so i will have full engagement but also have the end play needed...

Sale on Amazon for this Motorcraft unit. It has all the Ford casting #s on both sides as my original one does.

"melonized steel" - whatever the heck that is

Melonized is a trade name for a hot salt nitriding treatment that produces a very hard corrosion resistant surface on steel, also known as QPQ, it is most commonly used on guns.

the FORD drawing for the syncro references the gear drawing. the gear drawing specifically states "melonized" or some variation of that word for gear material.

I'm hoping that this gear on this 3.0 Windstar is "steel" since all these years of 3.0's cane with roller cams...

I chickened out...not sacrificing my stroker...

Sure looks like the gear that came with it is cast

In the last pic you can see the difference between the "stock" Ford Distributor cam gear. Notice the difference in roll pin diameter.

You will need to drill it out.

You’re right, that’s definitely a cast gear on there. How long was that in there?

Mock-up only...

When you buy the replacement steel aftermarket gear it has a larger dia roll pin hole AND of course you have to deal with the hole in the shaft being drilled off center...

Great, now I need to check my cam synchro to make sure it’s not a cast gear too. Which gear did you order, the SUM-850460? I noticed the 850463 ordered by 36fan is iron not steel.

Remind mne if I don't get it to you by noon tomorrow... :) I've got a couple dozen empty Summit boxes in my shop... lol

Mine is steel.

Blows my theory that all roller cam Ford engines have steel gears... least the 3.8 Windstar doesn't...

It says "wrong" on the blue tape because the roll pin size is not correct- just re drill to that diameter and you're good to go.
