I'm thinking about buying a welder. I've seen all the threads about welders, but everyone is talking MIG! I used to stick weld a long time ago (25 years!!), and was getting pretty good at it. I tried MIG welding then and couldn't even start a bead.:-X I think most of my welding will be some sort of fabrication (roll cage, bumpers, etc.) but I have a small amount of sheet metal that I will need to replace on my cowl.

Will I be able to do some spot or plug welds in sheet metal with a stick welder??

Do yourself a favor and go MIG. You sound just like me, pretty proficient stick welding 25 yrs ago. I broke down and bought a small mig (110V) the learning curve is pretty steep. It won't take long to get used to, and the welds are soooo much nicer.

;D ;D ;D If you can stick weld then you should not have any problems with a wire welder. It works the same but you dont run out of stick and can go till your done. Also no flux to mess with run a mix of argon and Co at an 75/25 mix it seams to work about the best. And you cant beat a wire welder for working roll bars ect. good luck.   Bill  %) :p

I've seen some "Tinners " that could run stick on razorblades , well not quite that thin but 18Ga. . They used a 6011 rod and moved real fast . It takes a ton of practice but you can plug weld with stick but MIG is much easier and cleaner .
