Hey everyone! I’m a wiring trainwreck and don’t venture off into the weeds well in this space.

Situation - Centech harness, explorer alternator, truck is under full rebuild.

Questions:
Do I eliminate the voltage regulator?
What is the wiring schematic for the alternator?
How / Where does it tie into the Centech harness?

Pics help…

Yes. On any swap to an internally regulated alternator, whether standard or “one wire” type, you always eliminate the old voltage regulator.
You can retain its wiring though, and use the old Centech green “S“ wire, to run to the green with red wire on the new alternator pigtail.

There really isn’t much of a wiring schematic from Centech. Or for a 4G (Explorer) to Centech harness specifically either for that matter.
You either build your own charge cable and fuse, or buy one like we sell for this kind of swap. Utilizing six gauge battery cable and 175 amp mega fuse.
I believe it’s our #6025 charge cable kit.
Don’t hold me to that though, and you can find it under “starters and alternators” on our website.

There are lots of discussions here on the forum about just such a swap. So you should be able to find very detailed and informative discussions, with pics.
Essentially though, the only wire you really need from the main chassis harness is the green wire specifically for the regulator, that’s on with the key in the ON position only.
That’s the most correct location/source.

For the alternator‘s new yellow with white stripe wire, you would connect that directly to the battery side of the starter relay in a perfect world. Or in a pinch, just connect it directly to the output terminal of the alternator.
That’s what many people do and it works just fine. But the “correct“ way is to do it like FORD did it, and connect closer to the battery.

Pictures make it easier... But everything Paul said.

-Battery power with a mega fuse, you can buy premade or make your own. Your Amp gauge will no longer be used.
-Yellow Batt power sensor can be attached to the Batt terminal on the Alt. A more correct way is to go to the Battery terminal or to the starter relay Batt terminal. It all works.
-Green wire from Centech to field wire (green/red strip) on the Alt.
-White with black strip stator wire is not used on a 4G alt. (3G and 4G have the same wiring otherwise)

-Alt Plug is available from Napa... Although I generally harvest this harness from the Explorer donor...

Oh, and the Centech large yellow wire for the factory 60 amp Batt terminal is not used. It can be repurposed to something else (Headlight relays power) or just capped off. If memory serves, the wire is fed off the back of the fuse panel with a fusible link wire...

Doug.
