Changing my tire carrier

I built a new bumper / tire carrier... (see below). When I mounted the tire on it I didnt like how the tire was so far from the tail gate. I am going to rework it a little to get it closer which should make it a little more stable as well.

I am considering leaning it in a little when I rework it. Maybe about 15 degrees or so... That should get it much tighter to the body... maybe around 4" or so. That would also match the angle of the top... or close to it.

Any thoughts on that? Problems I am over looking?

Anyone got any photos of a carrier that leans like that?

Thanks,

Greg

I imagine they are made to accept pretty decent sized tires and if yours are smaller than the biggest size it was designed to carry, it'll stick out farther.

If you don't anticipate going to a larger size tire in the future, I'd do whatever adjustments necessary to bring the weight of the tire/wheel closer to the axis of the pivot (closer to the tailgate and maybe move it to the right so the outside edge of the spare lines up with the outside edge of the Bronco)

The closer the weight is to the axis, the easier it will open/close and the less stress will be on the bearings/mount/welds etc.

If you plan on only leaning it back (like maybe only tilting the circular plate), will you also angle your HLjack mount? I'd be wary of getting it "too" close to the back end if you wheel it and tend to bump things.

You've got a beautiful EB there btw.

I built the rack with no spare tire to check it with... not smart on my part. I dont like the way I did the hi lift mount either.. going to change that as well.

I dont see me running larger tires than 35s.

I took a few minutes to draw it out in autocad this morning. If I cut the tube the round disk is welded to about 4" shorter and the angle cut the end with the plate to about 12degrees it should pull it up pretty tight without the chance of it hitting anything... I hope :)

I was just curious if it would look goofy at an angle like that...

Oh.. my Bronco takes photos well but it doesnt look as good in person... The paint job is 16 years old but looks good for its age.

G,
In my humble opinion, I don't think I'd like it angled with the center of the plate being where or near where it is. I think while the top would look good, the bottom would kick out and not look good.

If it were higher so the bottom of the tire was closer to the bottom of the rear hatch, then an angle would look good. Of course it'd be too high then as well.

I think I'd just move the HLmount (esp. if you're not really happy with it) and pull the wheel/tire closer to the body and put the HL somewhere else.

Do you have any pics w/the spare mounted as is?

The plan, if I angle it, was to not only angle the mount plate but move it back so that the bottom of the tire is touching or at least very close to the tube that swings. I see what you mean if I left the mount plate where it is the bottom would kick out.

I dont think I have a photo with the tire... I just finally found a spare tire last week.

Greg a bit OT but?

Greg it says you run F150 discs, did you run into any spacing problems with your rims. I have 15x7 vintage slotted mags, and I i just finished the swap. I am hitting on the outside of the sliding lock block on the rear of the caliper. Did you run into any issues and did you have to use any spacers?.. Thanks ...Mo in Clovis, CA:cool:
PS: the bumper looks awesome!

I am running the stock 76 Bronco discs... I have 79 F150 knuckles. I wanted to ditch the "Y" steering and also get the linkage up higher. So I used the 79 F150 knuckles and did a TRO. It works very well.

Here is an iPhone photo I just took with the tire mounted.
