Cleaning inside of OEM tank

Hey CB friends!

Any tips/tricks for cleaning the inside of an OEM rear steel tank?

I’ll preface by saying that the tank is complete empty and inside is dry.

The tank is removed from the bronco, and I pulled the fuel pick up out of it as well.

I can get the loose stuff with a shop vac im sure. Would like to be able to knock the internal surface rust/old sediment off of the inside walls.

Any tips or recommendations?

Thanks!

I saw a video some years ago where a guy strapped a fuel tank to his cement mixer after partly filling it with toy jacks and some kind of solvent. Made one hell of a lot of noise, but it knocked everything loose and got the insides clean.

Brandon, I’d have a radiator shop clean it, if you can find one. There are a lot of creative ways too, last one I did I used a piece of chain, a little diesel and strapped it to the wheel on my tractor and went and brush hogged a few dozen acres lol. Rinsed it with diesel when finished, it was clean.

I’ll third the rad shop if you can still find one. If not a chain or Some bolts and some solvent will knock any loose stuff out. You can buy kits with cleaner and sealer to get it back to working shape.

If your super broke. You can put “river rocks in there” water, seal up. Jack the back of your 4x4 pickup up. Put on stands. Ratchet strap tank to wheel. Put in 4 low. Put in 1st gear. Sit down. Enjoy cold snacks. Then drain it all out. Look in tank. Should be shiny.

Not responsible if you use to small of rocks haha!

I have done this. Clean as a whistle when finished. Pro Tip...Make sure it is secure to the rim. Brush hog would be hard on the tank.

Denatured alcohol works really well to get vanish removed from an old tank.
