clearcoat over primer

i thought i saw this before on here but cant seem to find it anyone have any info on using primer and then shooting a clear coat over it to seal it so that it has primer look but a gloss clear to help protect and make easier to wash . any pics of them i was thinking primer gray with clear gloss over it then all my accents in matte black like bedliner stuff

Are you serious? Why would you waste the money and time to clearcoat primer? If you are going to do body and paint work, do it right.

You can spray a coat of sealer the color you want then after it has flashed off spray your clear over it. In most paint lines primer and sealer usually come out of the same can but they have different mix ratios.

This is how I would do it....
Another way to get the look your after is you can just put a coat of sealer on it. After it has flashed off spray single stage the color you want with flattening ajent in it.

You could paint it the color you want and finish with a matte clear. Or a satin finish single stage.

They make flat colors that look like primer for the rat-rods, usually in flat black, used with a satin clear.

I love the look of primer. but, I think in the long run, it'd be better to do a regular color, with a matte clearcoat. there was a 4wheel & offroad within the last few months, where they did that to an H2, and it came out pretty cool.
everybody has their own tastes...I'll never put a shiny coat of paint on my eb

If you just use the single stage with the flattening ajent it will be a whole lot cheaper than base and clear. Spray a test panel to make sure you get the look your after. When you paint it it will look full gloss until it dries.

will this wash dirt off like a gloss paint or will it stick like a primer paint cause i dont want the dirt to stick and discolor paint

I have a single stage paint with flattener in it. It holds dirt pretty well. One trick is to use furniture polish on it. It shines it just slightly and the dirt does not stick quite as well, but if you dont want dirt to cling I would suggest using a gloss paint.

ok i have never painted before so right now i have two coats of rattle can primer on body can i put my paint right on that or should something else be done

Depends on how long you want the paint to last and also compatibility. Most rattle can paint or primer is purely junk. You may be able to paint over it but a paint job is only as good as the base. Some paints may also interact with the primer and never turn out real good. If an inexpensive paint job is all you want then get some acrylic enamel and paint over it and hope it doesn't react with the rattle can paint. If you want soemthing long lasting you need to remove all the rattle can primer and spray a good primer like epoxy and then paint.

Sorry to be harsh, but rattle can paint blows.

What color primer are you looking at? Grey, black, rust... or something else.

If black you have at least one VERY good option. Go to your local John Deere store and order a gallon of their "Blitz Black" tractor frame paint for about $35. It's durable, easy to apply, and cheap. This is what hotrodders have been using for years. I might even be able to find the paint code for you if I remember to look.

It will probably hold dirt some, but it shouldn't discolor like primer. At least not right away.

BTW, when I'm ready, this is what I'll be doing on my rig. Next summer if I'm lucky!
