I found an old bolt. It fit the hole pretty good. Filled the hole with grease. Hit it with a big hammer. Came out a little. Refilled the hole and did it again. Came out most of the way and pulled it out the rest of the way with a vice grip. Thanks everyone. Ordered a new clutch, pressure plate kit. Also a new rubber dust cover for the bell housing clutch release.

If the throwout bearing was wallowed out, inspect the bearing retainer/sliding tube for its condition.
Make sure that that sliding surface was not damaged.

Sliding tube for throw-out bearing is good. The only thing bad is the pilot shaft bushing. Good thing about pulling the engine is now I can maybe paint the firewall and rest of engine compartment.

Pulled the engine today. The rear main seal is not leaking. The oil was coming from the left valve cover and dripping down to the bell housing. The clutch has a couple of broken springs. The pilot bushing is wallered out. What is the best way to get the bushing out without the special tool?

I used the bread truck…. No joke. This works.

Jam chunks of bread into the pilot bushing until the space and hole of the pilot bushing are full. Using a bolt that slides snugly (not tight!) through the pilot center hole, hammer the bolt head to compress the bread.

Add more bread and hammer bolt into the smashed bread again.

Repeat until the pilot bushing falls out.

The idea is that the bread will push the pilot bushing out.

Clean up the bread on the floor and from the crankshaft pilot bushing hole. Bread is cleaner than grease…

Install new one and keep on trucking.

Yep. It works and I figured that would be the first one that somebody brought up.
Kind of glad the grease trick was first though. As that was my original go to.
I’ve never had the opportunity to use the bread trick, but have recommended it many times when that’s all someone had handy.
I always had good luck with grease and always had plenty around.

The bolt works good as everybody has found out, and so do some of the better clutch alignment tools.

Bolt and bread is just as easy and less messy.

How are you guys changing the rear main seal while on an engine stand? Seems easier in the truck.

Here's a vote for the bread trick to remove the pilot bushing. Works like a champ and less messy than the grease.

Got the new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing installed. Put the bell housing on the engine and tried to get everything lined up with the transmission. After numerous tries I removed the bell housing and installed it on the transmission. Worked like a champ. Have not driven it yet so we shall see how it all works out.
