Considering PS Pump Upgrade

Hi Everyone,

We had a great trip to Moab this year over Labor Day. Every year the Bronco gets more and more reliable.

The biggest complaint that I had this year was on several occasions the PS pump had issues keeping up. Granted, it was hot (100 degrees F) on a fairly long ascent. When trying to make some tight turns I got the typical squealing and erratic steering response.

The system now has a dual return Saginaw, hydroboost, redneck ram tied to a PSC cylinder and a decent size aluminum cooler mounted at the front of the frame rail. I'm running an Amsoil hydraulic fluid in the system. We're still running 35s, too.

I'm not sure if replacing the pump with something newer and possibly better built would help, or if I should take another step with trying to cool the fluid (or even changing the fluid I'm running).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jeff

The Saginaw can be modded to put out more pressure. Usually a stock box can't take as much pressure as a modded Saginaw can put out. But with all of your upgrades you are "not-stock", lol...
I do not know how to do the mod but I have heard it is not tough. I think Viper or Bowsher used to talk about it.

I'm going another route...

Where is the reservoir mounted? Is it remote or attached to the pump? Pics

We need to see when you are driving UP a steep slope to determine if the outlet of the reservoir is lower than the inlet to the pump...

Hi nvrstuk,

The current setup is a conventional dual return Saginaw with attached reservoir.

You have a cooler but is it doing enough?
Tom Lee has said that the temp should not be over 180° F, so when it is noisy check the fluid temp.

Probably rules out starving the pump and/or adding air into the system ...

Hi nvrstuk,

The internal hole size in the fitting that the high pressure hose is attached to may be the cause. ( I know next to nothing about what to do about pressure or flow) I have collected parts from several Saginaw pumps both from cars and trucks. I have fittings that have a hole diam. from .100" to .140". The .140 fitting should have about twice the flow of the .100 if that is in fact the problem. I wouldn't drill out your existing fitting you may want to go back to what you have now. Call Lee's power steering here in so cal. They can probably answer your questions or fix your problem.

Not all Saginaw pumps have the same fitting for the hose hook up.
