Dont the cranking pulses come from the magnetic pickup in the dist? so you are probably correct about the pickup going bad. Is kind of strange for them to go bad so soon. my experience with MSD tech is not that good. I hope you have better luck than me.

yeah I talked to them when I started having this problem. It was like I was bothering them. Broncobowsher was more help than they ever could have been.

yes, exactly. I was confused about the floating ohm readings I was getting, although I dont have that problem now!

And I agree, its not very comforting to have had to replace 2 in 5ish years. Especially since there is no warning and this time I was on the trail when it just suddenly died.

Its not the coil. The coil/whole ignition doesnt see anything until the fast computer sees cranking rpm.

I was refering to the magnetic pickup induction coil in the distributor.
Not the spark producing ignition coil going to the spark plug.

My bad for not clearly stating that.

good to read this thread i havea msd with the tfi and ford electronics. i dont do a lot of miles and i will keep the magnetic pickup in mind.so what i learned is measure the resisentence now and check the ac volts while cranking.thats the same as the durasparks. i changed a few stators as ford calls them.

Same here. It was like the guy had to take a dump and needed me off the phone. He must have diarrhea because it's that way every time I call. I don't call anymore, so he is probably better now. And yes Broncobowsher knows everything.

so the brand new MSD mag pickup ohms out at 576. And viola the truck runs again....seems too me that if the acceptable range is 400-1400 that it should be closer to the middle or WAY on one side or the other but I dont know squat about ohms.
