When I installed the 306 a while back, I put a lil warmer stat in(180°) thinking this would be best...using a "fail safe". Well as I learned...you can't tell its bad unless...you just never get to temp. this was the case-it failed and was wide open

So fast forward some... just before this past novrun... I replaced it with stock style 185°… since then, been fighting the same problem. engine never would get to temp! always bout 140 or 150...and the heater never put out like it should...using a mojave heater.

Today I decided to replace it AGAIN! Welp...surprise! it some how got cocked!! Causing it to not reach temps. Installed a new 190° and after 3 attempts...truck got to 185,187,183 after 30 min cool downs. Each time temp was around 150 or so for each start up. heres a pic...and yes, it was installed right. i remember the 1st night i installed it...it got to temp within 10mins idling in the driveway in 40 degree weather. since then...its never reached temp-even had to run cardboard in front of rad to bring temp up at our novrun@ure.

heres a pic

The fails safes seem to have a very high malfunction rate. I'd find you a good old Stant.

Sweet...seems to be working good. It averaged 195°… I think it was a 192 or 195 Tstat I installed. The highest this morning in 40° weather was 198 then started coming down

For a long time I thought I had the same problem but as it turns out I am operating just fine. 185 so it gets close to 190 then drops back down to 160 or 180 depending on the weather.

i was told a long time ago to never use a thermostat made from two different metals. in your case a ss/brass. different expansion rates. i have been buying all brass ones for a while and have not had a failure with them. most are called hi-po or something simular. they almost all have a small hole drilled in them. make sure it goes to the top. i also like to hold them in with a rubber band until the housing is tight to make sure they stay where i want them. i've never used a fails safe model either.
