currie High Pinion 9

Does anyone know what special parts I would need along with this?
My idea was to install it into my small bearing 9 and when I can afford it, move it to a beefier big bearing 9.

My ZF should come in today. I was thinking that a ZF, a strong box and a D20 might be a little long and too angular with a 5.5inch lift.

Ideas?

Some say the problem with the currie Hi9 is its driven on the coast side which can deflect the ring hear under load.

But, it may not be that big of a problem. I have no idea if its truly an issue. It makes sense, and I can see how ring deflection could be an issue, but it may be strong enough for most users.

I'd like to get some sort of High Pinion third member as well. I have a ZF/Dana20 combo but only 3.5" lift. I had to add 6° shims to the stock axle spring perches just to barely get within a few degrees, so I'd hate to see the pinion angle on a 5.5" lift.

I just don't know if I should save up for one of the true Hi9 ($$$$$$), get a currie high pinion or if niether is worth the money altogether.

Where do you find the true Hi9's? Are they out of a particular vehicle or can you get them new?

The Currie unit is a special casting to use the 8.8 gears out of the front of an IFS late model half ton truck.

The Hi9 is a true purpose built 9" with a high pinion.

Even Currie says not to use there diff in heavy or high powered rigs. It was made for little CJ5s.

There is no factory application for this. You will never find a junkyard version. They are 100% aftermarket. Buy them new, and they are not cheap.

I would love one of the True Hi9's, but they are soo expensive.

I think I'm going to try out one of the yukon super heavy duty third member cases, but I'm not lifted a high as you.

You might want to get the ZF/Dana20 installed and see what your pinion angle is and go from there. You may be able to get away with shims and/or rotating and re-welding your leaf perches. Or, you may be forced to get a really expensive, but really cool True Hi9.

If there is a drawback to the ZF it is the added length to the drivetrain.

I have the currie high 9. Love it. run 37" pitbull rockers, detroit and a 5.0. No problems, 1/2 the cost of the hi9. Currie makes a adapter bearing race so u can run ur current sb carrier until u r ready to upgrade.. its rated at 400hp and 35" tires so i doubt u will bust it

If you are the enterprising type, it's entirely possible to build an HP D44/50/60 using entirely junkyard parts for relatively little money. A few guys on Pirate have built their own.

ZF-D20 with a 5.5 lift yields you with about 31 inches of rear driveshaft. Spicer u-joints don't have much angle of operation, so if you are concerned about that, I would recommend upgrading to a Toyota CV rear shaft from High Angle Driveline in lieu of going to a high pinion rear differential.

As i remember when questions were asked, and this was a currie rep, that he definintly said the units were rated to up to 450 ft lbs with 33's, and he also mentioned uping the tire size would d-rate the unit. I have 2 crawler buds who run them, one with a supercharged v6 out of a forerunner- stock, weight 2700 lbs and another buggy around 3200 lbs with a early efi vette motor, stock, and both running 37's. It's been a good 4 years now for both and no failures. Both rigs see usual abuse big time! And yes you could always put the oversized races in till you could afford the upgrade. The hi 9 is a nice part as i have one to hold the torque. If you don't exceed the currie reps advise, it's probaly just fine! just my .02 cents

ZF / D20 & 5.5" lift = 28.5" drive shaft on my bronco. My front and rear shafts are the same length. Long travel, high angle CV drive line works just fine. :)
