Dana 20 Low gears?

I recently shaved a few (actully about half) of the teeth off my low range gear for my rear axle in my dana 20. I was thinking this would be a good time to put the lower 3.15 gears from wild horses. Any pros and cons? I can't afford an atlas, but I think I could squeez the money for the low gears out of the wife. Any good and bad stories would be appreciated. Thanks,
Chris.

I have them and I like them very much. I installed them (rebuilt transfer case) myself. You can find them cheaper than Wildhorses sells them. The gears are Teralow gears. Do a Google search for Teralow gears, or LOW20B.

I have the gear set from O'briens 4 wheel west 4.86 to 1 kit. Works good. about 1500 for the kit if I remember. If I was to do it again I would save for a atlas.

3.15 TeraLow Low20B have been in service since 2002 or 2003. I like them. Lower but not too low.

I have seen some gears that are so low that you loose normal low range. Either highway gears or crawler, no trail gearing. They could do highway, they could do rocks, but the sand wash in between was misery.

If I were to do it again, Stak box. Yea, out of the price range. But the box I would get is the 3 and 5:1 gear sets. A lot is because of how well the 3.15 tera lows work.

Rebuilt my t-case a couple months ago using the terra lows

Worked out pretty good as it's not too deep of a gear and does add a little grunt

I did end up with a wrong gasket kit and a wrong gear(jeep) but terra low corrected the issue

dont forget about the doubler, i think you can buy them for about the price of a low gear kit and you get multiple low gears.

Jack obrien has used tera low for 500 with no guarentee. 4x4 group buy has them for 739. Those are the best prices I found

We have been using the Teralow gears for about 8 years in our white Bronco, and would recomend them,if that is what you need.
Surprisingly, we have not had any output shaft issues.... Even after pulling a loaded Toyota FJ-55 up Cadillac Hill. My theory is that the output shaft breakage has alot to do with driveline angles.

I've been running the Teralow gears in the D20 in my buggy for the last several years, but they broke this year at Moab. Stripped 8 consecutive teeth off the low side of the intermediary gear. Not a hard fix, nor expensive at $160 for the new gear, but time consuming to have to fix (I can't drop the T-case out the bottom, it's a whole days operation to remove seats, floor boards, etc... to get it out from the top).

My theory is that the output shaft breakage has a lot to do with driveline angles.

Interesting! I've always felt it was from flat towing without pulling the rear driveshaft. Maybe 'C', all of the above.

All the websites state you need a six-spline input shaft to work. Is that what the Bronco has or do I need to buy yet another part?

The stub shaft with the stock 28 spline female that fits on the transmission has a 6 spline male on the other side for the gear to go on. If you have an installed, functional transfer case now, you have the parts you need.

Perfect - I try and keep it functional ;D

Probably be a good time to fix the little problem with the rear popping out of gear as well...

That is NOT the stub shaft. That is the output shaft. the 6 spline stub shaft is on the input side of the transfer cast, that picture is the output side.

Oh I know - I highlighted the part where he said functional and showed him that I'll try and keep it functional... ;D

Jack O Brien says he makes his own gears. And I believe terra low does not make a 4.86-1 kit any ways?? Any body else now?

Tera low is olny the 3.15- Jack make a few ratios- 4.86, 4.1, 3.6,and 3.1. They are pricey though around 1500 . He guarantees them. I spoke to him a month ago- He is a real nice guy. He does have the tera lows used for 500
