working on getting my 4r70w mated up and have a question on the dana 20.
Rookie here regarding transfer cases. When the front of the Tcase is open, I am inserting the input shaft with main gear attached. The main gear I believe mates to the idler shaft drive gear. which would be on the right when looking in the case.

No matter what gear i have the T case in I can not spin the idler shaft drive gear by hand. Is this normal? No history on this dana 20. Thanks!

Not really. If you put the front side into gear (high or low range) that idler gear should spin with the front yoke. Does that work?

Ive got it all bolted up. Is there any way for me to check the answer to this with it all bolted up? I could open the inspection plate. Hate to unbolt it all.

Sure. With the front side in neutral you should be able to turn the yoke (hubs unlocked and transmission in park). Now take the transmission out of park and put the front side of the tcase in gear (and rear side in neutral if that driveshaft is in). You should still be able to turn the front yoke but it will require more force because you are turning some internal transmission parts with it. If there's no possible way to turn the yoke you have a problem.
