Installing front disc brakes on the 68.

I pulled the spindle and noticed that the outer axle has a steel guard on it prior to the universal.

My kit is from Horsepower Sales on Ebay. In the kit's instructions, it specifies that the Dana 44 had the steel guard and the Dana 30 does not. So, the oil seal that came with my kit for a Dana 30 does not fit the axle. I'm wondering what gives. Did the PO install Dana 44 outer axles on the Dana 30?

Also, the old spindle had two brass colored spacers that were installed between the spindle and the axle.

My questions are:
Do any Dana 30s have a steel guard installed just prior to the universal?

Do I use the two brass colored spacers with the new spindle?

There should only be one brass washer on the end of the axle (between the U-joint and spindle). there is a chamfer and the chamfer goes toward the U-joint. The brass washer does 2 things. One it is a thrust washer for the axle and spindle, the other is it makes a sharp 90° for the spindle bearing seal.

Now for the seal not fitting, is it the little one for the spindle bearings or the big floppy one that is about 3" across? The big one stretches over the sheetmetal slinger (your gaurd) that is already on the axle. That slinger is on all the axles I can think of. together it is a 2-part sealing system. the big soft floppy seal keeps a lot (but not all) of the junk away from the little spindle seal.

And it completely possible that someone could have changed something over the years. Outer axles are the same over all years of EB both D30 and D44 (inner axles are different).

wow..I wonder what gives. Even the drum 44 outers had no metal flange..used the lip seal on the knuckle. That metal flange came along to carry the Forsheda v-ring face seal whihc alos brought the brass retainer fior the little lip seal that was added to protect the inner needle bearing. But ALL of thiose details came along only with 44s....You certain you are dealing with a 30 to start with?

It's most definitely a dana 30. I had my camera with me for photos, but my wife took the SD card out of it for a camera I just bought her. So, I took a lot of pictures not realizing there was no SD card!

I did manage to get the seal to fit the axle, but I'm still a little confused why there were two brass washers installed?

Unless we're talking about a different flange, all the drum-brake ones I've worked on did.
My own '71 with drums had both the slinger (what I always called the metal flange thingy) pressed (and rusted) on to the outer axle near the yoke AND the brass thrust-washer. It also had the two seals.
The first replacement kit I ever bought, back in '78, came with a plastic replacement thrust washer, along with the small open lipped o-ring seal for the bearing, and the larger multi-lip seal.
No metal flange was included in the kit, of course, since it wouldn't really be a "service" item anyway.
At the time, I just assumed that the flange was not going to be an easy-to-remove part anyway, so I wouldn't have tried even if a new one had come with the kit.

What's that you say? ;D It's all Greek to me.
Is a Forsheda v-ring seal the normal one that comes in the kits? If so, that's exactly what mine had already. As well as the little lip seal to protect the spindle bearings. Not sure about a brass retainer ring. Never seen one that I remember, but as mentioned, the bronze thrust washer thingy was there on my '71, and all the '72's that we worked on.

That the piece you're speaking of? I think this is the first time I've heard the term "forsheda", so I wasn't sure. Sounds like it might be vaguely familiar, but I can't place it.

Thanks

Paul
