Doing my first re-gear ever on my Dana 30 and wanted to see if anybody who has a manual can check me before I jack this up. I know these are newbie questions, so be gentle…

1) Pinion preload on NEW bearings should be 10-30 in-lbs with the carrier OUT, or is that with the carrier installed?

2) carrier cap bolt torque spec at 50 ft-lbs

You are on the right track. Just don’t worry about the preload measurement with the seal installed or before the back lash is set and everything is happy. Then pull the carrier, and set the preload. Install the correct bearings, verify preload then install the seal, carrier, check back lash and pattern one last time, and install the cover. Don't forget new axle seals before the carrier goes in for the last time.

Thanks guys

Started at 6 am and went at it for 8 hours straight (not including the teardown I did last weekend and the hours I spent mic’ing every single piece and laying out parts

I think I got it nailed. Just pressed on the final bearings to the carrier and set the new seals in

Garage got above 100 degrees so I called it quits with the pinion still in on the setup race and without the seal.

If it coola off one night this week after work, I’ll pull the pinion, press in the inner race, and torque it all back down with the fresh pinion seal

Fingers crossed nothing funny happens between the setup bearings and pinion race and the final install…

Got around to wrapping it up today

25 in-lbs of preload with the seal installed om new bearings

.0075 backlash

And I liked the pattern

Went ahead and did the kingpin kit while I had everything apart too.

Heck of a learning experience!
