Dana 44 Front Disc Conversion Parts (Dana 60 Calipers on a Dana 44??)

I need some input on a front disc brake conversion I’m trying to pull together on my 74 Bronco. Standard drum to disk swap. My question is this….I found a guy that has a high pinion Dana 44 axle from what he believes to be a late 70’s Ford F150. He’s willing to sell me everything from the knuckles out. It has eight lug hubs and what he says is Dana 60 caliper brake brackets (missing calipers). Is it possible to have Dana 60 calipers come standard on a Dana 44 axle with eight lugs? If so, will this work for my conversion? I know I’d need new five-lug hubs and rotors, as well as new calipers, etc? Thanks in advance for the input. Morris

It's hard to see your brackets in your picture, but I'm pretty sure I know which ones you have. Yes, Ford used the same brackets and calipers on their 8 lug D44s and the D60 front ends for a few years in the late 70s.

The following article can give you some details on the conversion:

http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/transmission-drivetrain/154-1206-vintage-jeep-dana-44-big-brakes/

I gathered parts to do it but realized after mocking up some pieces that it was going to severely cut into my turning radius and I wasn't ready to pull the trigger on 16" or 17" wheels at the time.

Todd,

Thanks for the quick and detailed reply. Based on the article and your feedback, I think I'll pass on this one and look for the more standard five lug conversion.
