Detroit Locker Install

Ok Guys.

I just purchased a 31 spline Detroit Locker from Summitt to be delivered Wednesday, hopefully to have the Bronc back on its feet this weekend. After searching and reading numerous threads I decided to leave that FREE mini spool on the shelf. Since I won't be pulling the pinion all I should have to reset is the backlash (.008 - .010) correct? Shouldn't I be able to use the bearings off the old carrier? They seem fine to me. What's the best way to get them off? suggestions? If I get new bearings are they readily available at the parts house?

I use a bearing separator and a press to remove the bearings. If you do not damage them, you should be able to reuse them. I'd set the backlash closer to .008. The Detroit adds .005 play at the axle. If you set backlash at .010, it'll seem like a lot of slop in the drivetrain.

You are correct all you will need to do is set the back lash but pinion depth should be checked anyways you never know. Also new bearings are cheap and usually readily availible why mess with used ones.
Hate to tell you this but you should have bought the detroit from Complete Offroad you could have got it and new bearings cheaper than just the detroit from summit

I just put in my detroit. I bought a complete 3rd member from Mike and Complete Offroad with 4.11s, Detroit and all setup. I just bolted it on and it ROCKS!! He was cheapest around by FAR!
You'll luv the detroit. Only a small bit of handling quirks, but they are fun

what did you end up paying if you don't mind asking? i got all my front end stuff (detroit electrak, gears, install kit, axles, u-joints, balljoints) from Mike and he was great to deal with.

I don't have a press. Will I be able to tap the bearings on with a hammer and block of wood or maybe a brass punch? Or, should I just take it somewhere and have them pressed on. I think I am going to get new bearings, seems stupid not to.

a piece of pipe that has an id big enough to rest on the inner race and then a block of wood and a bfh. a punch will want to cock the bearing and it will bind. needs pressure all the way around to seat evenly.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. I may have a tool to put the bearings on with, I'll have to do some digging. I have 3 drawers in a roll away tool box that are full of pullers and different types of knockers that were my Dad's when he was in business. I forget to look through these things all the time. I have actually bought tools just to learn later that I already had one.
